Daniel Warren Johnson’s Next Series? CHAINKATA, About “Chicks. With Chainsaws. In Space.”

After delivering hit after hit, writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson is back with his next “eye-melting” series from Image Comics: Chainkata, which is about “chicks. With chainsaws. In space.” Will those chicks have a tragic backstory about a dead parent who’s demise of relatively natural but devastating causes forces them to pick up chainsaws? Tune in to find out this November!

“Ever since my start in comics, I’ve wanted to make a science fiction book that truly felt different from everything already out there,” said Johnson via press release. “It was 2017 when I drew the first sketch of Luma, Chainkata‘s main character. From that point, it took me NINE years to come up with a story that I felt was worthy of being on the stands, and Chainkata is the end result of that journey. I have pushed myself narratively and artistically further than I ever have before, and I believe it shows in the pages you’ll be reading this fall. Please join me for an epic like none other. The Chain awaits you.”

Having previously delivered hits like Do a Powerbomb, Transformers, and The Moon is Following Us, this series seems to call back to his earlier hits like Extremity and Murder Falcon. Per Image, “In Chainkata, Luma is a chainsaw-wielding warrior queen, seeking out an unknown power in the vastness of space. All she wants is to find peace, but violence and terror follow her through every black hole. The story will blend the epic, high-stakes sci-fi of Beta Ray Bill and Space-Mullet and with the character-building depth of Extremity and Do A Powerbomb. It is the culmination, and maximization, of Johnson’s craft and the perfect read for fans of action-packed comics with art that leaps from the page.”

There’s also a trailer just posted that reveals a lot more of the look of the series, which is classic Johnson:
