Jeff Lemire is wrapping it up. Or at least, he’s wrapping up two runs at DC Comics, as Fury of Firestorm will end with issue #9, and his run on JSA will end with issue #24.
The news was revealed during a community AMA (Ay, My Amigos) on League of Comic Book Geeks, where Lemire was asked about the status of both titles. When asked about Fury of Firestorm, the DC Next Level title that is releasing issue #4 next week, Lemire wrote, “Firestorm is actually now 9 issues. I just finished the final script actually and I’m really excited about where we leave the character, so I would be open to doing more at a later date if the opportunity is there.”
Mind you, this is good news. Fury of Firestorm was announced by DC merely as a new series, but was only planned for eight issues. So we’re getting an extra issue of the run that is looking to redefine the character for a new generation. As for when the final issue by Lemire and Rafael de Latorre will be released, that’s TBA, though given issue #6 hits in September, the series will now likely wrap up in December, 2026. And before it does end, Lemire teases that Captain Atom will play in, in a “big way” in the final three issues
What about JSA, though? “Not announced yet, but what the hell, I’ll say it here, my run on JSA will end with #24,” Lemire wrote simply. While he didn’t follow up on whether the title will continue beyond that, the issue will likely debut in October, which seems like a good time for a reboot; or for JSA to be put on the shelf for a bit. We shall see!
So: Jeff Lemire, totally done with DC, right? WRONG. He’s got at least two books in some stage of development, including a third Robin & Batman book with Dustin Nguyen that does not involve Tim Drake (the first series focused on Dick Grayson, the second on Jason Todd), as, “We actually came up with an idea that we like better than doing Tim Drake for the third book and it does involve one of the Batgirls.”
Plus, while light on details, Lemire noted that he had a “wild” idea for Animal Man that he’s discussing with DC editorial.
But the big thing that will be going for a while? Absolute Flash, which was originally planned for 12 issues, then expanded to 24, and now Lemire notes that thanks to strong sales, “At this point, it seems clear to us all that we can pretty much do these books as long as we want, so it’s allowed us to get even more ambitious in our plans. I just finished scripting Issue 20 and I have the series outlined through #36 now.”
Coming up in that series? Issue #22 (Absolute Flash #19 will be released in September, for some context) will feature (probably) Absolute Firestorm. “Abra Kadabra and Hunter Zolomon are coming in Issues 18-29 and after that I have a take on Rainbow Raider that is pretty crazy and fun,” says Lemire. And Absolute Atom and Absolute Rainbow Raider are coming, as well.
This is all in addition to his creator owned work like Crowbound and Minor Arcana (which will also be ending with issue #24). So even with Firestorm and JSA ending, Lemire is still a busy, busy guy.
