Marvel clarifies Romita Jr. cover confusion.
American Flagg gets collected.

BOOM! Gets Rights To Invader Zim:
BOOM! Studios has acquired the rights to Jhonen Vasquez’s classic Nickeloden series Invader Zim, with plans to reprint old comics and publish new ones.
Per IGN, there, uh, aren’t many more details about the deal other than you’ll get to see all the characters like Zim, GIR, Dib, and Gaz in the reprints, likely of the Oni Press sequel series that ran from 2015-2021. That series was an official continuation of the cult-favorite cartoon and spinoff movie Enter the Florpus, and ran for fifty issues and five of a quarterly magazine that was abruptly ended due to shipping issues during the height of the COVID pandemic.
This marks the latest deal of this sort for a classic cartoon property from BOOM!, including My Little Pony and Jem and the Holograms.
Marvel Clarifies Romita Jr. Cover Confusion:
There’s been a fair amount of confusion over the now infamous John Romita Jr. “shrug” cover for Amazing Spider-Man #1000, featuring pencils by Romita Jr. that were painted over by Paolo Rivera. It seemed to have been pulled as a main cover after controversy, then brought back as a variant cover. But nope, it’s a main cover, and Marvel is sticking to that harder than Spider-Man sticking to a wall.
Said editor Nick Lowe, “Our announcement of the added Pepe Larraz cover seems to have been misunderstood. In addition to John Romita Jr. and Paolo Rivera’s jam cover, we also wanted to highlight the ‘#1000’ more concretely, hence Pepe’s cover with color artist Marte Gracia. Our goal is to bring as many legendary Spider-Man artists together for this monumental celebration.”
Got that? The two main covers for the anniversary issue are the “shrug” one which is meant to be a grounds-eye view of Spidey swinging, from Romita Jr. and Rivera, as well as one by Pepe Larraz which was added later. But also, as Marvel further clarifies, John Romita Jr. will be doing a different variant cover, Paolo Rivera will also be doing a variant cover, and Larraz is doing a variant cover. Which are different from those main covers.
And also, there are more covers being announced at the same time, including a MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Variant Cover featuring Peni Parker and a Marvel Animation Variant Cover showcasing a scene from the 1967 Spider-Man animated series. You know the one.
Perhaps more interestingly than this particular tempest in a teapot is that 94-year-old Larry Lieber, the younger brother of some guy named Stan Lee, wrote a story for the issue titled “Of Webs and Six-Guns, with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli.
Amazing Spider-Man #1000 hits stores on September 16, 2026.
American Flagg Gets Collected:
Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg is getting collected by Image Comics in a new omnibus, including never-before-collected material.
Per ICv2, Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg! Omnibus will run 1,064 pages and include American Flagg! #1-#30, as well as a special, shorts, extras, and even a new, 26-page story created expressly for this collection.
Said Chaykin, “When I first produced American Flagg in the 1980s, I had no idea just how much I got right about the dystopic future careening toward us. Needless to say I’m delighted to have the material available digitally. Now get to work you intellectual property thieves and scumbags – here’s one more thing to steal.”
Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg! Omnibus hits stores on March 2, 2027.
