Usually when you’re writing your classic “does Supergirl have a post credits scene” type article, you wait until after the movie opens because, of course, you’re gonna get some spoilers in there. After all, a post credits, or end credits, or mid credits, or whatever you call it scene is, by its very nature, going to riff off of either scenes that happen in the movie, or the ending itself.
I’m going to save you time here, though, as the answer is, no, Supergirl does not have a post credits scene. It also doesn’t have an after credits scene, or an end credits scene. In fact, the credits (after a reiteration of the Supergirl movie logo) are pretty no frills themselves, sans any sort of animation or bombast. So much so that at a critics screening I attended earlier this week (check out my Supergirl review for more on that) one attendee walked out complaining, “that’s no way to start a universe.”
…Which well, sure. Thanks to nearly two decades of Marvel movies we’ve gotten used to pivoting our thoughts from the movie we just watched to the next movie in the franchise. It’s the sort of thing that’s not only powered the MCU, but the whole ecosphere of blogs, websites, YouTube and TikTok channels (including, frankly, sometimes this one) that breathlessly speculate about what’s next.
Almost to a fault, though, DC Studios head James Gunn has emphasized they’re not doing any of that in the new DCU. While some folks might have been bummed about the goofy end credits scenes from last year’s Superman, and will be further frustrated by the lack of end credits on Supergirl, leaving that out versus a teaser for Clayface or Man of Tomorrow keeps our focus on the movie we are watching right now. And isn’t that a better way of seeing things? Rather than constantly asking “what’s next,” instead being required to sit in our reactions to the thing we just watched.
It’s unfortunate, I guess, that the thing you just watched in this case — that would be Supergirl — is a movie that is just “okay,” so perhaps it could have benefited from some post-credits distraction. But the point is, it’s a better precedent to set for the longevity of a movie (or TV show) that it stands on its own instead of depending on 35 other movies and 10 TV shows for you to understand what’s going on, even as you’re standing up in your seat and wondering where you spilled all your popcorn.
Say what you want to say in the movie itself; and if there are extra little bits or jokes you want to throw in, those can live on DVD extras or get dropped online. Long live the lack of after credits scenes! And death to articles like this one, which spend 600 words, when one — “no” — will suffice.
