Supergirl is now in theaters, and that means folks in the cinemas are discovering that DC Studios has been playing a little trick on them. While the trailers and posters have been front-loading the relationship between Supergirl, aka Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) and Krypto the Superdog, well — spoilers past this point — Kara’s canine companion is not in the movie a whole lot, for a very good reason. Wondering if Krypto dies in Supergirl? Here’s what to know from both the movie and the comic book source material, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
To set things up a little bit, in the movie we meet a girl named Ruthye Marie Knoll (Eve Ridley), who sees her whole family get killed in front of her by a monster named Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). She swears vengeance on him, and ends up trying to recruit Supergirl to help her. The Maid of Might wants nothing to do with this, though, because she’s partying under a power-sucking red sun and trying to forget the pain of losing her own family years prior.
Unfortunately, Krem needs a ship off the planet, so he takes Supergirl’s — and when Krypto sees the sapceship being stolen, he charges at Krem… Only to be shot with a poisoned arrow. Krem escapes, and a healer on Ruthye’s planet tells Kara that Krypto is paralyzed, in terrible pain, and will die in 72 hours if they don’t get the antidote to the poison, which is only around Krem’s neck.
That’s the setup, and for those of you who don’t want to see a dog die, you’re probably wondering what’s next. So let’s get into it.
Does Krypto Die In The Supergirl Movie?
First of all, if you’re googling this in the theater, what the f**k is wrong with you, get the f**k off your phone, it’s f**king rude. Second, the movie is an hour and 48 minutes long, you can stand to wait a little bit to find out. Eat some popcorn, drink some soda, calm down. Also there are no end credits scenes, so you don’t have to google that later on. TURN OFF YOUR PHONE.
Anyway, on the off chance that you’re searching for this before you see the movie because you (rightly) can’t deal with animal death, the short version is, no, Krypto does not die. They do manage to beat Krem, get the antidote, and bring Krypto back to health by the time they leave Ruthye’s planet. In fact, the final scene of the movie finds Kara returning home to Clark Kent/Superman’s (David Corenswet) apartment with Krypto, who proceeds to completely wreck Superman’s kitchen.
Krypto is alive, well, and will team up with Supergirl and Superman again in next year’s Man of Tomorrow. Good news!
Does Krypto Die In Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow The Comic Book?
Funnily enough he dies even less than in the movie in the DC Comics series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. In that book, while the setup is relatively the same, in the final issue of the book Supergirl reveals Krypto is fine and recovered, and has been the entire time they’ve been on a journey to find Krem. She got the healer to lie because Supergirl’s goal in the book was to show Ruthye how to maintain your internal moral compass in a universe that constantly pushes you to do bad… And she knew Ruthye wouldn’t listen to that lesson if it didn’t seem like Kara had something invested in searching for Krem as well.
So Krypto doesn’t die in the comic either, he’s completely fine and cured soon after he gets hit with the arrow. There’s not even an antidote necessary, it’s a fake-out.
And there you go! Now you know, there’s no dog death anywhere near this movie, or the comic book. Seriously though, put your phone away, ticket prices are insane you can manage for two frickin’ hours without scrolling TikTok.
