IDW has been killing it — pun intended — with their horror lineup under the IDW Dark label. And that’s expanding in weird and wild ways with two new books: Any Given Smile, and A Quiet Place: Rising Tides.
Coming from different creative teams than the currently running, pretty excellent Smile For The Camera and A Quiet Place: Storm Warning, the new books will feature brand new characters in brand new scenarios based on the hit films.
First up is Any Given Smile, a title that A) I love, and B) have spent all day fantasizing about where they can go with the next series (best I’ve got is Half-Smile Marathon, which is why IDW won’t return my calls). Written by Stephanie Williams with art by Pablo Collar, colors by Triona Farrell, and letters by Ariana Maher, the book will be set in the world of professional football as well as sports betting.

The year is 1995 and all eyes are on the American Arena League football championship game. The Sharks gear up for the most significant event in the AAL’s 20-year history, and their sudden-star backup quarterback is feeling the pressure from his teammates, his fans, and his debts to the city’s gambling underworld. A string of suicides hits the community hard, drawing a suspicious sports journalist deeper into that world to examine their connection to the big game. No one can trust anything or anyone as a mind-bending and mysterious Smile Entity and its horrifying visions threaten their payouts, their sanity, and their lives…
Next up is A Quiet Place: Rising Tides, which takes place in the Florida Keys, after those horrible sound hating aliens have already wrecked the world. Written by Declan Shalvey and Luke Sparrow, with colors by Colin Craker and letters by Jodie Troutman, here’s the synopsis (and one cover) for that one:
When a young woman named Grace tracked down her estranged father to a run-down houseboat in the Florida Keys, she expected disappointment, resentment, maybe even closure. Instead, the entire world ended.
Now stranded in the aftermath of the invasion that shattered civilization, she and her sick, aging father cling to survival on the open water – the only space safe from the creatures who attack at the sound of a single breath. But his oxygen is running low, supplies are disappearing quickly, and the deadly predators circling the shoreline are learning fast. And on the horizon, a hurricane is coming.
Both books will hit comic book stores this September. The Adventures of Smilo & Otis? And it’s about talking animals who get infected with the Smile entity? Hello? Helloooooo?
