As I’m sure we’re all aware and don’t need to be told or explained in any way, today is 616 Day. And to celebrate, Marvel has announced “Big Guns,” a four-part crossover coming to Wade Wilson: Deadpool and Punisher this September and October.
Okay, fine, since the mainstream Marvel Comics universe is designated 616, fans (possibly) began to celebrate June 16 as “616” day. Marvel very quickly jumped on it, and has used the day all the way back since [checks notes] last year to sell merchandise, and announce at least one title. In this case, all due respect to Marvel, but writer Benjamin Percy let slip he was crossing over Deadpool and Punisher when we had him on our podcast about a month ago, so sorry for spoiling your big, very real holiday.
Context out of the way, Geoff Shaw will draw the Deadpool issues, while José Luis Soares will draw the Punisher issues. And yes, there will be firearms.
“When you’re writing The Punisher, and you’re writing Deadpool—two street-level characters with opposite personalities—the math works itself out,” Percy said via press release sent out at (no joke) 6:16 AM EST. “I had to bring them together. Violently. Get ready for non-stop mayhem, the re-invention (and glow-up) of a classic villain, and the introduction of the Merc-mobile (a rolling HQ I’m pretty damn excited about) as well as a new weapon that will change the 616 forever. Unlike Frank and Wade—who naturally despise each other—Geoff Shaw and José Luis are a perfect pairing, the best pens drawing the biggest guns.”
In the crossover, Deadpool takes on a new job, Punisher is out to settle a score, and they shoot at each other. You get the gist.
