Prime Video isn’t just popular because of The Boys; the streamer is known for animation, too. Invincible is very much the flagship title, but there is also the criminally-underrated The Legend of Vox Machina. You’ve got to be pretty decent to have three seasons under your belt, right? Well, a fourth season is on its way to kick June off, teasing yet another rollicking, fantasy-driven ride in the wild world of Exandria. But for those who aren’t familiar, fear not — we’ve got you covered.
This series was brought to life by Matthew Mercer, an avid gamer and voice actor who worked on franchises such as Resident Evil and Naruto. He created the fictional world of Exandria in 2012 for his personal Dungeons & Dragons campaign. In time, he launched the live play web series Critical Role in 2015, which had guest actors like Will Friedle, Joe Manganiello and Felicia Day, among the many who played along.
In 2019, the Critical Role cast launched a Kickstarter campaign to animate the property. It resulted in the first 10 episodes out of 12 being made for Season 1, with most of the cast returning to do the voice work. Later that year, Amazon Studios picked up the rights, extended the first season by two episodes, and incorporated it into the streaming stable. The rest is history. As for what really draws viewers in? A lot has to do with the titular charismatic mercenaries, Vox Machina, and the dynamic in their fellowship.
This cartoon positions them, much like the live play, as sell-swords on Exandria seeking coin by tending to supernatural cases. It’s sort of like The Witcher. Leading the way are the half-elf twins, Vex’ahlia “Vex” Vessar (Laura Bailey) and Vax’ildan “Vax” Vessar (Liam O’Brien ). Their mother, Elaina, got killed by a dragon before the series began. This pushed Vex to study dragons to kill them, to the point she gets headaches when they’re nearby. Vex perseveres, no matter what. She is a skilled warrior and has a fuzzy magical grizzly bear, Trinket, as an added weapon. Vax is equally talented with his knives, although his ability to temper his emotions makes him the better strategist. The twins are inseparable, stemming from them running away from their home, Syngorn, and their abusive elven father, Syldor, who thinks they’re a curse to his family tree.
Coincidentally, while the twins didn’t experience much warmth from dead ol’ dad, they do have a caring team they consider a true family. Percival de Rolo (Taliesin Jaffe), or Percy as he’s affectionately known, is in love with Vex. Percy struggled with losing his kin, too. His family’s empire, Whitestone, was taken over by the vampiric villains, the Briarwoods. The family was slaughtered, leaving Percy to become a gunslinger. His mysterious magic pistol (the Pepperbox) has inscribed the names of folks he wants to kill, which very much nods to Arya Stark and her quest to avenge her family in Game of Thrones. Unfortunately, Vex tries to deny her feelings, opting to stick to vengeance rather than reciprocate Percy’s passion. She doesn’t mind a fling here and there with him, however, after years of trauma-bonding.
Pike Trickfoot (Ashley Johnson) is a gnome cleric who brings comedic relief. She is loyal to the goddess, the Everlight, although her magic sometimes wanes according to her stress and lack of confidence. She is the companion of Grog Strongjaw (Travis Willingham), a brute who looks like ThunderCats‘ Panthro, but whose personality is similar to Marvel’s Drax. He can’t tell humor from reality and isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. But he has tons of heart and soul. Both are essentially siblings.
Keyleth of the Air Ashari (Marisha Ray) is a half-elf druid, who acts as the stronger mage in the squad. The Ashari is divided into different segments, including Fire and Earth. Keyleth wants to master all elements, which is why she is undergoing a trial of leadership known as the Aramenté. She, too, has doubts over her powers, purpose and if she can help Vox Machina rid the world of evil. This maelstrom within is why she is hesitant to reciprocate Vax’s affection. Duty first.
Last but not least is Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel). This gnome bard is quite a joker, which he works into his music. If it were up to him, he’d spend his days drinking and having sex with strangers. His promiscuity aside, he uses his lyre to cast spells, complementing the mystical power of the unit. Scanlan has feelings for Pike, but she doesn’t take him seriously, giving the cartoon yet another romantic arc. That said, it’s not all fun, games, trysts and chasing soulmates. The Legend of Vox Machina is filled with insidious tyrants and malicious despots who want to claim dominion over all. With that in mind, let’s break down all these harbingers of destruction by the season and how the heroes fared with each obstacle.
What Happened In The Legend of Vox Machina Season 1?
Season 1 revolved around vampires, zombies and demons. It began with the mercenaries trying to earn money by hunting a beast for the Tal’Dorei Council. This mysterious creature razed farmlands, killed innocents, and proved difficult to slay. The fact many groups failed spurred the egos of Vox Machina on. What a scalp this would be, General Krieg endorsed the group, adamant they could save the realm.
When they tracked the behemoth down to the Shalesteps, they learned it was a blue dragon, Brimscythe. Unfortunately, Brimscythe almost ended them, leaving the team divided if to carry on. Learning the monster slaughtered more families in the Shalesteps village caused them to stay in the hunt to save the region.
Vex did feel like there was a traitor on the Council, fingering Sir Fince as a suspect. The mercenaries trailed Fince to Krieg’s mansion, only for Krieg to kill the intruder. As fate would have it, Krieg was Brimscythe in disguise. He was baiting Vox Machina in and biding time to decimate them. He had no idea Fince was onto him. Luckily, the heroes learned the dragon’s weak spot was its neck, enabling Grog to deliver the death blow. As a result, Vox Machina was feted and allowed to stay in the capital, Emon, as celebrities. This led to another game-changing rivalry.
The Briarwoods, Lord Sylas and Lady Delilah, were coming to town for a banquet of nobles. This riled Percy, who felt his kin deserved justice after the coup that deposed them at Whitestone. Sylas used his charm to bamboozle the sovereign, Uriel, and hide how decrepit Whitestone had become. Delilah spun the lie even more, employing propaganda to paint Percy’s family as traitors who abdicated their duties.
Quite a few chilling revelations ensued. Firstly, Vax learned Delilah was planning to use a seedy tome for some secret ritual: one to bring about a malevolent god: the Whispered One. He stole the book, realizing the bloodsuckers were setting up something nefarious. Secondly, a shadowy figure linked to Percy’s gun was corrupting him all along to seek retribution. This demonic spirit feasted on his rage, sowing tension with the Council who wanted the impulsive rogues kept under watch.
The Briarwoods stole their book back, raising zombies to cause a ruckus. Once the villains left, Vox Machina gave chase, bar Pike. She stayed behind to reestablish her connection to the Everlight. Vox Machina went to Whitestone, where they found nothing but squalor. Keyleth was crushed to see the Sun Tree poisoned, creating physical and mental darkness in the locale for the vampires to rule.
As the mission rolled on, Percy would kill Captain Stonefell and remove one name from his Pepperbox. The twist was, his sister, Cassandra, was still alive after the coup. Percy’s old professor, Anders, fell out with the de Rolos after they refused to build him a refinery to harness the magic mineral, residuum. The bitter teacher held Cassandra hostage all these years as payback.
Anders, as ruthless as ever, slit her throat when the heroes raided. He then used magic to mind-control Grog, Vex, Keyleth and Vax to take Percy out. The resourceful Percy, though, killed his former mentor, removing another name from the Pepperbox, and freed his allies. Delilah, sensing the mercenaries were coming, sent more zombies. She didn’t want anyone stopping her ritual to bring the Whispered One into reality, not after she brokered a deal for him to make her a necromancer, and Sylas an immortal vampire, years back.
Pike, assured of her abilities, astral projected in and empowered the heroes to slay the undead. The townsfolk would rally and murder oppressors like Duke Vedmire, while Percy led the charge into his old stomping grounds. But the more he chased the vampires in the castle, the more lost he became. Not even Keyleth healing Cassandra could break the hold the spirit had on him.
To make it worse, Percy found the seedy Dr. Ripley imprisoned in the dungeons. She helped usurp his family years back and tortured him, so he wanted to put her in the ground. He didn’t care that the Briarwoods backstabbed her and kept her prisoner. Cassandra stopped him, however, exposing to Pike how her sibling was tainted by a demon. While all this drama played out, Sylas and Delilah catered for the invasion. They brainwashed Cassandra and Vax while the mercenaries were trapped in a room and faced death via acid. The Briarwoods needed these two sacrifices for their ritual.
The heroes escaped, only for Ripley to abandon them. Ripley didn’t want to risk it against the royals. Undeterred, the final scrap saw an adaptable Keyleth using the Sun Tree to burn Sylas to death, liberating Vax and Cassandra. A resilient Percy shot Delilah but the fracas left Keyleth on the verge of dying. Thankfully, the heroes would find a way to heal their friend in a refining room.
Cassandra, enraged and frustrated, ended up stabbing Delilah, who fell into a vat of acid and died. This acid came in handy for another reason. Scanlan threw the Pepperbox into it to free Percy after the macabre gun-ghoul, a figure called Orthax, tried to control the gunman again. A cured Percy left his sister in charge of Whitestone, but when Vox Machina returned to the Tal’Dorei Council for their plaudits, new enemies arose. The final scene depicted four ferocious dragons coming for blood. Ah, yes, the hits kept on comin.’
What Happened In The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2?
Season 2 also had 12 episodes, pivoting on these dragons, the Chroma Conclave. Raishan, a green poison dragon; Umbrasyl, a black acid dragon; Vorugal, a white ice dragon; and their leader, Thordak, a red fire dragon, would raze Emon and set the tone for the season. Killing the likes of Uriel proved everyone was expendable.
Brimscythe had infiltrated to weaken Emon’s forces for his scaled overlords. When Vorugal assaulted the heroes at their keep, Keyleth used her magic to help folks escape to Whitestone. A new ally, the wise Keeper, Yennen, suggested the heroes obtain aid in Vasselheim. They had one thing going in their favour. Thordak was a narcissist who wanted to enslave the realm and have everyone bring him riches. Rather than hunt Vox Machina as a pack, the dragon boss left it up to Umbrasyl.
After Vasselheim failed to offer assistance, the heroes sought out the monster-hunting guild, the Slayer’s Take. This bunch didn’t like Vax and Vex for double-crossing them, but the duo, Zahra and Kashaw, proponents for a good time, enlisted. The journey took the coalition to the sphinx, Osysa, who revealed they needed to locate magical weapons known as the Vestiges of Divergence to defeat the beasts.
Grog, meanwhile, had his own journey of self-discovery. He was being corrupted by the sword he took from the Briarwoods, the Craven Edge, akin to Percy and the Pepperbox. During the quest to find enlightenment from Osysa, Grog fought the Earthbreaker, Groon. The latter won, revealing Grog’s biggest villain was himself. If Grog didn’t find the true source of his strength, he’d die soon. Grog became worried because there was a lot to accomplish still.
The heroes were told to find Osysa’s mate, but only after they found the first Vestige. This was an armor known as the Deathwalker’s Ward — located in the tomb of the Matron of Ravens’ champion. This was no easy task, at all. Vox Machina were ambushed by a fish race known as the Adaro, while Kashaw and Zahra tried to steal the armor for themselves. Further tragedy struck when Percy urged Vex to open a sarcophagus, leading to her death. Vax, though, brokered a deal with the Matron of Ravens to save his sister. He offered his soul and became the Grim Reaper, of sorts, for the death goddess.
Vax would marginally unlock the armor’s power and help set Kashaw and Zahra straight. Little did he know, Ripley was monitoring them en route to Westruun for her own ulterior motives. The heroes clearly needed their power-hitter, Keyleth, to recover fully after the Briarwood debacle.
Flashbacks revealed Keyleth’s mother, Vilya, never returned from her Aramenté. But Vilya did pass down knowledge on learning the power that Fire and Air held. This would be useful in the present when the heroes encountered the Fire Ashari under attack from golems. Fans discovered the Fire Ashari sealed Thordak away in the Fire Plane, but once the dragon broke free, these golems spilled over. Keyleth, buoyed by her mother’s memory, became a fire being, using all her might to seal the rift. She could tell she needed to master Earth and Water for the trials to come. Clearly, she was made for fans of Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The undertaking continued. Vax’s visions, due to the armor, sent them to Rimecleft to find Osysa’s mate, Kamaljiori. They endured a test to ‘wound’ him, which did feel impossible. Scanlan defied the odds and realized he could spiritually cut the monster via a song about broken hearts and failed love. Scanlan was blessed with the sword, Mythcarver, thereafter, which showed him where the other Vestiges were: a bow hidden in the Fey Realm and a pair of gauntlets in Westruun.
Things went to hell immediately. Umbrasyl raided, killed Kamaljiori and stole Mythcarver, while a maddened Grog impaled Pike. Keyleth’s teleportation spell backfired, too, with only Keyleth, Percy and the twins making it to the Fey Realm. They fought a slew of monsters, before learning the bow, aka Fenthras, was in the Shademurk Bog. The twins had to pass through their home first to get the weapon. They insulted their obstinate father, who in turn berated them. The amplitude of this pain allowed the sadistic, Archfey Saundor, to prey on a depressed Vex in the bog. Resilient as ever, she fought and killed him before claiming the bow. The heroes were able to then use a portal from another comrade, Garmelie, and return to reality.
As for Scanlan, Pike, and Grog, they ended up near Westruun, where Craven Edge kept sucking Pike’s life-force. Grog, sick of the nightmares of killing his friends, destroyed the blade, finally overcoming its bloodlust. Lo and behold, his physical form diminished. Fortune would fall into their laps, though. They met Pike’s great-great-grandfather Wilhand, who healed her. Grog, however, felt useless. He was afraid of Westruun because he was ashamed of his history there with another enemy.
It turns out, Grog’s uncle, Kevdak, wore the Titanstone Knuckles Vestige. In the past, he almost beat a young Grog to death after Grog began rejecting the marauding ways of their “Herd of Storms.” Wilhand brought Pike to heal the banished Grog, informing how they became so close. Grog remembered all this and that his strength was protecting loved ones. He found his uncle and challenged him. Kevdak was leading the tribe into disrepair, going as far as battering his own son, Zanror, to show he was the alpha.
Grog regained his bullish form in the duel, but Kevdak used the gauntlets to grow in size. When the rest of Vox Machina arrived from the Fey Realm, a fracas broke out. Vex would teleport Grog high into the sky, giving him unassailable momentum to take an ax to Kevdak, ending his reign. Grog donned the gauntlets, left the goliaths to a now-compassionate, Zanror, and asked them to help maim the dragon who oppressed and forced them to offer tributes, Umbrasyl.
After all this drama unfolded, Scanlan decided a one-night stand with a flutist from a troupe he met at a tavern, Kaylie, was the best reward. Color him shocked when she tied him up and accosted him, revealing she was manipulating and entrapping him. Surprisingly, she was the daughter from a fling that Scanlan couldn’t even remember. Kaylie didn’t end up killing him, however. She didn’t want to live with the blood of a deadbeat on her conscience, so she used an enchanted sword that would pin him down, akin to how Thor’s hammer would act as the ultimate weight. It proved fortuitous. Vox Machina would get their underdog back, as well as a new tool. They needed numbers, because Ripley was in league with Umbrasyl, eager to exploit the dragon’s resources and the power of the Vestiges. Ripley was undermining Thordak, too, and trying to get Umbrasyl to take charge.
Still, not even Ripley could save Umbrasyl from the next attack. The heroes infiltrated through the dragon’s anus and used Kaylie’s sword to stop him from flying. The creature would slip away, damaged as hell, and crawl back to his lair. Scalan would get the glory blow, stabbing the dragon with the stolen Mythcarver. Scanlan then used an energy blast from a song and channelled it through the blade to finish him off.
Scanlan even got a kiss from Pike, who thought he died. It was sneaky, but the only way he could negotiate that smooch. As the crew partied at Whitestone, more twists unraveled. Yennen revealed herself to be Raishan. She wanted to help destroy Thordak, but distrust was in the air. While all this happened, Thordak downplayed Vorugal’s fears, admitting they still had a trump card: a bevy of unhatched dragon eggs to weaponize! Yup, one battle after another.
What Happened In The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3?
Raishan positioned herself quickly as an unpredictable wildcard in these 12 episodes. She confirmed she freed Thordak from the Fire Plane so he could cure her of her poison. Thordak failed to do this, opting to keep her as a pawn, hoping and waiting. Raishan volunteered to help the heroes find the other Vestige, the Dawnmartyr plate in Ank’Harel. With the eggs ready to hatch, the alliance needed to act fast.
Keyleth didn’t like the idea of working with the adversary. Disenchanted, she went to the Sun Tree where Vax pursued and kissed her, only to attain a vision of everyone but her dead. She was mourning the squad in isolation. This left Vax reluctant to embark on a relationship, assuming this path would lead to his beloved watching them all perish. Instead, he re-focused on the mission, which saw them barely escape Thordak’s hatchlings in Emon. The Hail Mary? Raishan. Her intervention saved them, convincing them to partner with her, much to Keyleth’s dismay. The friction would usually be cut by Scanlan, but he covertly went off to find Kaylie and mend fences.
The heroes apprehensively made their way to Ank’Harel, but Ripley had beaten them to the punch. After the Umbrasyl failure, she concocted a new scheme, stealing the item for herself. When Percy confronted Ripley, he found that she was working with Orthax.
The sinister duo kidnapped Percy, adamant they needed his skill to mass-produce supernatural weapons. Ripley’s father was wiped out years ago by mages known as the Cerberus Assembly, so she thought purging the world was the only corrective measure. She had no clue Orthax was manipulating her and feeding off her personal vendetta. Vox Machina rescued Percy, just to get arrested and brought before Ank’Harel’s ruler, J’mon. After a drunken disaster of a rendezvous with Kaylie, Scanlan returned to free his colleagues, using Mythcarver to expose Ripley’s deceit.
Things weren’t going well for Ripley, who learned her Vestige was fake. The real Dawnmartyr was with a collector located in the Hells of Despath. As Thordak mulled his next move, questioning Raishan’s loyalty, another tyrant popped up. This villain was front and center during romantic threads intertwining. Percy and Vex hooked up for a supposedly-meaningless fling, Vax rejected Keyleth, while Scanlan was left with egg on his face after misinterpreting Pike’s friendship for something more.
Vox Machina plowed on, working with a new colleague, Dohla of the Draconian Assembly. Draconia guarded a rift the heroes needed to go to the Hells, with Dohla being the key to passage. Percy and Vex stayed back while their team went through the portal. But Dohla had her own love triangle with Vox Machina’s other friends, Allura and Kima. In one of the most soap operatic sub-arcs, Dohla betrayed the heroes to Vorugal because she was jealous of Allura and Kima. Vorugal, funnily enough, ate Dohla amid all her annoying whining.
The rest of the altruistic posse met the collector, Zerxus, in the Hells landscape. Pike played a sinister card game for the Vestige. After losing, she doubled down and wagered her team’s souls. She won this time, proving she had assertive leadership qualities. When they left with the relic through the rift, a testy Zerxus sent the monstrous Yenk to gain revenge. Yenk went through the rift, collided with Vorugal, and then tried to take the dragon down. This clash of titans ended with Vorugal slaying Yenk but coming out with major damage. This was the boon Vox Machina needed.
Kima inflicted a wound in Vorugal’s chest via Mythcarver, Vex shot arrows into the same spot, while Keyleth harnessed vines to destroy the creature’s heart. The power of teamwork was on full display. But belay the goal of conquering? Nope. Thordak had other plans. Enraged, he was goaded by Ripley to send his newborns to feed on Whitestone’s citizens. This was her and Orthax’s way of making Percy suffer again.
Initially, the heroes didn’t have an inkling of knowledge as to what was transpiring. However, Pike’s power was growing, giving her selective premonitions. Once Scanlan admitted to her that he had a child he was trying to win back, her sight allowed her to see Kaylie far away. She hid how she craved a bond with her father. Scanlan clamored to find her again, while the team sauntered over to Whitestone to find it in ruins. Vox Machina thwarted the hatchlings, but the devastation and casualties were huge. The heroes renounced Raishan, certain she was playing both sides. Percy then begged Vex to hunt the real culprit he surmized set Whitestone up: Ripley.
In the subsequent confrontation, Pike would expend her powers to save the team from Ripley’s legion. She finally started to believe she could perform magic without the Everlight. But when Pike drained herself, the worst case scenario happened. Percy had Ripley dead to rights, but he refused to kill her. He wanted to end the vicious cycle of pain, but it gave the toxic, selfish Ripley a window of opportunity to shoot him dead. Pike couldn’t heal him, dishing out the heroes’ first lasting loss.
Scanlan returned from unsuccessfully trying to find Kaylie and her dance troupe. He was crushed over the fact they had to hold Percy’s funeral. An aggrieved Vex was upset over spurning the chance to make their relationship public. Conversely, the scared Vax and Keyleth appreciated life more and got intimate. Raishan came back, forgiving and offering goodies, such as the fact Thordak killed Vax and Vex’s mother. Vox Machina decided enough was enough, mustering up a coalition with Kashaw, Zahra, Earthbreaker Groon, the Fire Ashari, and the elves of Syngorn, who finally appreciated the twins’ bravery. This time, they’d go on the offensive.
But if it walks like a duck, er, dragon and breathes like one, yeah, don’t trust it. Raishan ended up selling the alliance out, allowing Thordak to blindside them. The ‘king’ killed Kashaw, all while the heroes fought hatchlings and destroyed eggs. With Thordak losing his mind over seeing his offspring gutted, Raishan yet again stunned fans by turning on him. Vax would use his magical wings from the armor, become a bullet of sorts, and crash through the dragon’s heart, killing him permanently. He avenged his mother, at last.
When Keyleth drummed up courage to thank Raishan, however, the last dragon backstabbed the heroes. Raishan spirited away Thordak’s corpse for her true endgame. She wanted to conduct a ritual in a hidden locale, transfer her soul into Thordak’s body, and be rid of her poisoned vessel. She simply used the heroic consortium as a weapon.
A perturbed Keyleth went back to her tribe, angry how no one listened to her instincts. Still, her empathy couldn’t be quelled. She underwent a special ritual that could help her find Raishan by connecting to the essence of the planet. The gamble was that she could lose herself to the Earth the way others before her tried. Inspired by her mother, her father Korrin, and how little faith the other senior members had in her, Keyleth channelled love and became a super-elemental. Vex, as expected, was her emotional engine, in disceerning Raishan’s lair.
Vex and Vax soldiered on, found Ripley’s ship and brutalized the scientist’s crew. It culminated in Vex shooting her dead with an arrow in Percy’s honor. There was no time to gloat. Keyleth beckoned the twins to come back ASAP. Pike did her part as well, bringing Kaylie into the fold to help heal Scanlan after the Thordak war left him in a deep slumber. Kaylie woke him up, enabling the father-daughter duo to bury the hatchet. Kaylie remained selfless and urged her fathre to answer Keyleth’s call
Vox Machina processed Keyleth’s details and swooped down on Raishan. While most of the gang was pummelled, Keyleth tapped into her Ashari powers. She thought she killed Raishan by snapping her neck with vines, but her timing was off. Raishan already jumped into Thordak’s corpse, but she was underestimating Keyleth. With Vax’s assistance, the Ashari warrior would use vines to hold down Raishan’s new form. These vines acted as a delivery mechanism, connecting to the poisoned human form Raishan took and transferring the venom to the Thordak frame.
Raishan once more began to wither in this shell. Keyleth used crystals from the Earth to impale Raishan-Thordak and hasten the death, too. With all the dragons finally eviscerated, one would think it was time for a ball. Wrong.
Being connected to the afterlife allowed Vax to suss out that he could resurrect Percy. He sensed Percy’s soul in Ripley’s gun in their climactic sprawl. He posited that if they got Percy’s body, he could go into the pistol, defeat Orthax and bring Percy’s soul back to the land of the living. Vax contacted the Matron who warned him she wouldn’t nurture such an unnatural ploy. Nonetheless, he relented and pushed on.
With the mages ready to enact the transfer, Vax went in and found Percy forging weapons in this soul realm. Orthox gaslit Percy to think he was in the real-world making arms and ammunition. Vax deployed the power of love, reminding Percy to come back his siblings up top. Vex crying and confessing she missed her soulmate was the melodramatic catalyst to cracking the spell.
Percy’s soul heard her, paving the way for Vax to bring him home and restore him in the flesh. The gun was then destroyed, seemingly killing off Orthax for good. Outside of the demon’s domain, Percy was still frail but he knew he’d recover in some months. The ending saw the team make big decisions. Scanlan went off with Kaylie to make up for lost time and explore the world. Vax accompanied Keyleth to go finish her trials. Sadly, he was left hiding a rotting mark on his hand, affirming there would be a price to pay for the Percy rescue.
Percy and Vex were helping Whitestone rebuild, while Pike and Grog stuck together and vowed Vox Machina would live on. If they ever needed their buddies, they’d re-assemble. All’s well that ends well? Get real. The final shot showed a cult summoning none other than the Whispered One, teasing the chaos to come in Season 4.
What Will Happen In Vox Machina Season 4? What We Know So Far:
Season 4 will occur a year later, with these disparate adventures setting the stage for the fifth and final season. From The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 trailer, the death cult will be causing major havoc. Those familiar with the Critical Role lore, or D&D in general, would know the Whispered One is Vecna. No, not the Vecna from Stranger Things, but a furtive demigod with a lot more apocalyptic power.
Fans are already theorizing that the newly-cast Andy Serkis will voice this being. It appears the sect needs souls and bloodshed to fuel the god’s resurrection properly, building on what the Briarwoods started. They’re seen embarking on genocidal runs.
The heroes will be picking up allies along the way after reuniting. One notable colleague even got his own featurette. This is Taryon Darrington, voiced by Wayne Brady, not Sam Riegel (one of the show’s executive producers) from the live play. Admittedly, Brady nails the kooky, quirky and regal vibe of this knight-like character, who specializes in magical relics.
Taryon and his robotic sidekick, Doty, will come in handy for Percy’s schemes. One other clip shows Percy hatching a smash-and-grab job akin to Ocean’s Eleven, so they can steal information that librarian monks hid away on the Whispered One. It won’t be easy given the portents of doom Pike is experiencing. She’s getting more visions that hint at trouble outside of Vecna.
The Matron corroborates this in a vision to Vax, indicating there is a bigger plan afoot than the heroes know. And that everything they built up as a family is leading to something monumental. Maybe the Matron isn’t so bad, after all. A lot will hinge on what the mark on Vax really means.
What’s for certain is that as the heroes embark on this investigation, having the Vestiges to power up will be a big boost. Some conspiracy theorists do think they could corrupt the heroes, especially someone like Pike who wants to trust more in herself and less in the Everlight. Hopefully, none of them will become corrupted by power. Ultimately, as Vin Diesel would say, they can always rely on the power of family to keep them in line and bolster them for whatever opposition comes to light.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 will officially premiere on Prime Video on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. The season will be 12 episodes long, with three episodes dropping per week until the finale.
