In news that is sure to send a shiver of excitement down any Doctor Who fan’s spine, a press release about the storied series will be released in a week or two, maybe.
OH HELL YES. HERE WE GO, PRESS RELEASE NATION!!
The news comes from BBC Radio 2 (via IGN), where showrunner of the currently non-existent show Russel T. Davies responded obliquely to the gossip from UK rag The Sun that Doctor Who‘s previously announced Christmas special has been canceled.
“You will get an announcement… there’s a press release lumbering through the BBC, which as you know is like the Jurassic period and 57 people have to sign off on every single word,” Davies said. “So I promise you, in about a week or two weeks, there will be a press release. And I can hear the gears slowing down even as I say this.”
AHHHH OH MY GOD, CAN THIS REALLY BE HAPPENING? A PRESS RELEASE MAKING ITS WAY THROUGH THE BBC? I’VE DREAMED OF DAYS LIKE THIS!
For a little bit of backstory here, Doctor Who was in a bit of a ratings freefall after the most recent two seasons starring Ncuti Gatwa that were produced in collaboration with Disney, and released on Disney+. However, Disney and the BBC parted ways, and a critically lambasted spinoff series The War Between Land and Sea has yet to stream domestically on the service.
However, we were told that there would be a Christmas special this year which would likely pick up on the cliffhanger that — spoilers past this point — The Doctor has somehow regenerated as Billie Piper, who previously played Rose Tyler on the reboot that began airing in 2005.
Since then, we’ve only really heard the BBC affirm that Doctor Who will be back, and also there will be a pre-school series at some point on CBeebies (though that news was about a year ago in 2025 via a OH MY GOD A PRESS RELEASE LITERALLY SCREAMING RIGHT NOW).
The issue is that one would think an effects heavy show like Doctor Who should have already filmed a Christmas special, if it’s going to be released around, you know, Christmas. However, no insult meant it, uh, does not take long to film these specials, and they can probably make it all take place inside a Dalek or something if they need to (a Dalek bottle episode, perhaps).
So what will happen with Doctor Who? Will there be a Christmas special? Another series? More spinoffs for children who literally could care less? We’ll know more once the world’s most anticipated press release gets released to press. Unless it doesn’t.
