Big news for Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips’ That Texas Blood: the Image Comics series is being developed by FX as a drama series, from Jim Mickle and E.L. Katz.
That’s a lot of names, and there are more to come, but if you’re not familiar the neo-noir Western is a fave of Comic Book Club’s thanks to its careful pace, ability to switch genres, and deeply crafted history that ranges centuries including a spinoff miniseries, The Enfield Gang Massacre. Basically, there’s a lot to work from in a TV series.
And luckily, Condon and Phillips are in good hands. Mickle and Katz are two of the guys behind Hap and Leonard, another well-regarded modern Western based on a book series on SundanceTV. Moreso, Mickle is the showrunner of Sweet Tooth, yet another fave of this site, and was kind enough to hop in on three season finale podcasts for our Sweet Tooth podcast to judge a candy contest each time, which he really didn’t have to do. Will we do a podcast called Those Texas Teeth and taste candy again? Probably not!
Mickle will also direct the show (yes, the whole thing), which is written and EPed by Mickle and Katz for 20th Television. Per a release from Image, “Michael Waldron and Adam Fasullo via Anomaly Pictures (which is under an overall deal at 20th), as well as Adam Fishbach, Jeremy Platt, Linda Moran, and author Condon will all executive produce as well. Phillips is serving as co-executive producer.”
If you recognize Waldron’s name, he was in charge of Loki for Marvel, but more on target for this was showrunner of the excellent and highly underrated Starz wrestling series Heels.
