Company Selling Stan Lee AI For EBooks, Comics, More:
Today in “ew! yuck! gross!” a company called ElevenLabs has struck a deal with Stan Lee Universe to add the voice and likeness of the deceased legend to its marketplace for celebrity voices and likenesses.
Per Variety, the partnership will start with the “Stan Lee Book Club of the Month,” which seems to imply that Lee is highlighting a different book club every month and not a different book, using Lee’s voice as narration for classics — starting with Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. In addition, you can use the site’s visual generator to put him in comic book panels. One innovative example has Lee walking on a busy city street saying, “So I says to him, I says – Excelsior!”
Wow, it’s like Stan Lee is here with us right now.
Naturally, this announcement suffered immediate push-back online, notably because Lee’s handlers were accused — and one successfully charged — with elder abuse in later years, and this seems to be yet another example of vultures preying on his legacy. Last September, LA Comic Con also dealt with immediate pushback on their ghoulish display of an AI replica of Lee, which they charged fans for to ask questions and take pictures.
Meanwhile, another controversial Lee project, Stan Lee: The Final Chapter, has found a distributor. The documentary is based on hours of footage from Lee’s former assistant Jon Bolerjack, who filmed Lee’s abuse first-hand, but has since explained that he didn’t feel empowered to stop it.
Disrespectfully to everyone involved in both of these projects: cut it out.
Dark Horse Workers Form Union:
The workers of Dark Horse have formed a union! Per The Beat, Dark Horse Workers United has unionized, and are asking interim CEO Jay Komas to recognize the union by June 3.
The goal of the union is to improve job security, wages and benefits; increase transparency; and have a “seat at the table” in terms of decision making.
This announcement comes at a very critical time for the company, as Mike Richardson, the founder of Dark Horse, was removed from the publisher back in March, replaced by video game exec Komas. In addition, Dark Horse just announced the closing of all its retail spaces by September, when notably Dark Horse started as a comic book store.
The Dark Horse Union is not calling for a boycott of Dark Horse products, though I guess we’ll see what happens after June 3. More on this as it develops.
DC Finest Editions Are Coming To Digital:
Great news for fans of classic comic books: DC has announced that multiple DC Finest editions are headed to the DC Universe Infinite Digital Service, ranging from Supergirl and Superboy, to weird science fiction and horror, and beyond.
While a lot of the service seems geared towards new comics and digital exclusives, this is — to editorialize — a great step towards archiving some classic material, including a volume focusing on the late, great Peter David’s work, who passed away a little over a year ago on May 24. Now you can read some classic ’90s comics by the writer, alongside a bunch of other weird stuff.
DC also promises this if the first of many DC Finest editions to come to the digital comics reader, including Peacemaker, Robin, Green Lantern, and more. The first five collections are available to DC Universe subscribers now.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And I think Tiny Onion should unionize so they can have a Tiny Onion Union.
