In this week’s penultimate episode of HBO‘s Euphoria, titled “Rain or Shine” — and spoilers past this point — Jacob Elordi’s character Nate Jacobs died of a snake bite while buried in a coffin under the construction site for his retirement community. I realize there’s a lot to unpack there, but the most important thing to focus on is: could Grogu, from the number one movie in the world The Mandalorian and Grogu, have saved his life?
Hm, perhaps that also requires some explanation? Okay, fine, here goes, and first Euphoria. Nate has been sinking all of his money into building a retirement community that, frankly, anyone could have told him wouldn’t work. Then, starting with his wedding, things went from bad to worse when loan shark Naz (Jack Topalian) explained that he now owed him a million dollars, and started chopping off pieces of Nate’s body until he paid — which he didn’t.
In this week’s episode, Naz buried Nate in a coffin deep under the construction site with a breathing tube to the surface and the threat to his estranged wife Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) that if she didn’t pay, he would die of dehydration in 72 hours. While Cassie and her friend/frenemy/manager/boss Maddy (Alexa Demie) scrambled to come up with the million bucks, Nate’s hollering and pounding attracted a rattlesnake, which fell down the breathing tube and bit Nate in the neck.
Through a series of circumstances frankly not worth explaining, Naz was killed, and Cassie and Maddy watched as the coffin Nate was buried alive in was dug up… Only to discover he was already dead, his tongue bulging out of his mouth and the live rattlesnake, er, rattling on his chest.
Meanwhile, this weekend also saw the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, which features a massive creature known as a Dragonsnake. While The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal, occasionally) fights off the snake and is rescued by his young green ward Grogu and some ridiculous puppets known as Anzellans, he’s bitten in the process… And we discover that thanks to the bite, Mando will likely die.
Grogu, instead, slowly nurses Mando back to health in the movie’s best sequence, building him a tiny mud hut to hide him, and bonding with some sort of river creature to get medicine that eventually helps save the bounty hunter from his deadly snake bite.
…And given these two events happened in the same weekend [Carrie Bradshaw voice] I couldn’t help but wonder: why didn’t Grogu save Nate Jacobs?
Now, I can already hear your objections, like “Grogu doesn’t know Nate” or “Euphoria takes place in a galaxy far, far away.” But the fact of the matter is that if Grogu could help nurse Din Djarin (the name of The Mandalorian, which is said exactly zero times in the movie) back to health, he could have done the same thing for Nate.
Okay, fine, it might have been a tight fit for Grogu to go down Nate’s breathing tube… But it’s the perfect width for the Anzellans. Sure, they might also think Nate is a “horrible baby,” but at the same time it’s reasonable to speculate that after Nate was bitten by the rattlesnake, Grogu could have sensed this with the Force and flown to California where some of the Anzellans could have jumped down Nate’s tube to bring him medicine from the river creature, provided by Grogu. Heck, they wouldn’t even need to put him in a mud hut because Nate was already in the coffin, hidden from the droid army attempting to track him down at the behest of the Hutt twins. Sorry, I meant “Cassie and Maddy.” Weird spellcheck error there.
And with only one episode left in Euphoria, bringing in Grogu now would have been perfect timing. Rue (Zendaya) thinks she’s found god, but what if she found Grogu instead, and he helped train her in the ways of the Force? Just think how much fun it would be to have Lexi (Maude Apatow) trying to wrap her head around Baby Yoda showing up on the set of LA Nights? Or Jules (Hunter Schafer) could trade her sugar daddy Ellis (Sam Trammell) for the sweets-loving alien!
But frankly, it’s to be expected from the shoddy writing showrunner Sam Levinson has been delivering this season on Euphoria, which seems to be entirely ignoring the events of the Skywalker Saga. Even if he doesn’t want to deal with the plotline of the Imperial Remnants, what’s going on with Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen), or any of the characters from Ahsoka, at the very least he could have brought Grogu in for a last minute save for everyone’s favorite character, Nate Jacobs. Instead, Nate is now as dead as that space shwarma Martin Scorsese serves in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Thanks for nothing, you horrible baby.
