How Did Terror Die In The Boys Show

There were multiple huge deaths in the series finale of The Boys, titled “Blood and Bone,” ranging from — spoilers past this point — Homelander (Antony Starr) getting his head pried off by a crowbar to Butcher (Karl Urban) getting shot by Hughie (Jack Quaid) in the Seven conference room in Vought Tower. But no death was a bigger punch in the gut than Butcher’s faithful bulldog, Terror. Particularly because it came out of nowhere.

Well, mostly nowhere. Unlike in the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson where Terror is killing by the universe’s Martian Manhunter stand-in Jack From Jupiter (who does not appear in the show), Terror isn’t slaughtered by a wanton Supe. We have been told he’s getting on in years, and the season has spent a lot of time reestablishing the relationship between Butcher and Terror after sidelining it for several seasons.

That led to this season’s excellent fifth episode, “One-Shots,” which featured a section (mostly) from Terror’s doggie perspective. In the vignette, Frenchie (Tomer Capone) tossed a ruined chocolate soufflé in the garbage, not realizing chocolate is toxic to dogs. And of course, Terror ate the soufflé, but was saved thanks to some quick thinking from Hughie. The purpose of this seemed mostly to show how Butcher can be swayed by Terror; and in particular, once Hughie saves Terror’s life, Butcher sways from swearing he’s going to release the Supe virus and kill all Supes, to giving Hughie a chance to track down V1, the compound that might keep Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and Annie (Erin Moriarty) safe from the virus.

Which does nicely set up what happens in the finale, but doesn’t explain how Terror died.

How Did Terror Die In The Boys finale? Old Age, Probably

After killing Homelander, The Boys are relaxing with a few cigars and planning their next moves. Butcher tries to convince Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) to go run away with him, but Ryan explains Butcher is a bad man… Killing Homelander doesn’t suddenly redeem him or anything. So Butcher leaves to see the one creature who loves him no matter what, Terror… But Terror is lying in the bedroom, not moving. He’s died.

There’s no telltale chocolate soufflé around, no Supe lurking in the shadows. So it’s pretty clear that Terror died not of foul play, but natural causes. That explains why he played such a big role this season, and it pushes Butcher to take the Supe virus and release it, which leads to his death by Hughie.

But was this really necessary? Did the show have to kill the dog in the final moments of the episode? Personally, I’m on board with nearly every choice the show made, it all followed from what had been set up over five seasons, bringing pretty much every character full circle in a satisfying way. Killing Terror to motivate Butcher to kill all Supes makes logical sense, but there were so many other ways to get there.

One option? Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) pops up on TV in the same sequence to explain he’s back at Vought and it’s a new day at the company — while we later discover they’re up to their same old shenanigans. So knowing the conflict would never end, wouldn’t Butcher take the steps to end it, going to Vought Tower to eliminate all of Stan’s stooges?

Another option: Butcher was dying of cancer until he took Compound V, which gave him super-cancer; that’s what his tentacles were. While it’s possible that Kimiko frying the Compound V out of his blood also fried the cancer, it’s a little more reasonable to think she fried the Compound V that was keeping him alive, and now he’s about to die again of the cancer ravaging his body. With that in mind, wouldn’t he want to take everyone else out on the way out? Heck, the season even started with Butcher killing his dad (played by John Noble), who himself was dying of cancer, essentially putting him out of his misery. So given how focused the show — and this episode in particular — was on fathers and sons, why not make that parallel, instead of unnecessarily killing the dog?

But whatever was discussed, what they went with was old dog Terror dies, and that’s pretty much it. RIP, Terror, hope you’re humping Homelander’s butt in heaven.

The Real Terror Passed Away In Real Life

There’s one extremely sad addendum here. Filming for The Boys Season 5 completed way back in July of 2025. Later that year, Bentley Alexander, the real bulldog who portrayed Terror, passed away. And not only that, he passed away on November 2, 2025. In the comics, Terror died in The Boys #60, which hit stores on… November 2, 2011.

So while that didn’t impact filming or post-production, whether it was necessary or not the final shot of Terror takes on extra poignance when you know his dog actor didn’t survive much past that point, either.
