It’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, and to celebrate that fact DC Comics will release three variant covers by artist John Giang.
Those covers will include:
Superman #38, featuring Cheshire Cat and Red Canary
Batman #9, featuring Katana
Justice League Unlimited #19, featuring the Atom (Ryan Choi)
That’s basically the whole news, so you can stop reading now if you want, but DC does call out other AAPI characters in the comic book universe in their press release, including Monkey Prince, Cassandra Cain, and Connor Hawke all of whom were clearly not fit for variant covers (just kidding, I’m sure they just commissioned Giang for three and the above is who they went with). Curiously, they don’t mention Kong Kenan, aka New Super-Man, but what can you do?
The other bit of news is that there will be “a dedicated AAPI hub on DC UNIVERSE INFINITE, spotlighting stories by AAPI creators and featuring DC’s AAPI heroes across generations. The collection includes recent titles like Monkey Prince by Gene Luen Yang and Bernard Chang, Spirit World by Alyssa Wong and Haining, City Boy by Greg Pak and Minkyu Jung, and The Vigil by Ram V and Lalit Kumar Sharma, plus collections spotlighting AAPI creators Jim Lee, Mariko Tamaki, Dustin Nguyen, and more. Fans can also explore Cassandra Cain’s current Batgirl series, which continues her legacy as one of DC’s most beloved AAPI heroes. The full curated collection is available now on DCUI.”
