There’s a lot to dig into with this week’s Season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again, from — spoilers past this point — Daredevil (Charlie Cox) revealing his identity, to Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) going into exile. But the big one to discuss looking forward is, did the show just set up a reboot of Netflix’s Jessica Jones… Possibly titled Alias Investigations?
To give a little background here, the episode ends with Jessica and her daughter Danielle (Annabelle and Isabella Ivlev) in a mostly empty office, when someone enters… It’s Luke Cage (Mike Colter) back from working for the mysterious Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard) overseas. Luke seems haunted, but happy to see his wife (?) and daughter, they embrace, and close the door revealing the writing on the windowpane: it’s “Alias Investigations,” the name of Jessica’s private investigator business.
It’s clear that the shingle is open once again, and in fact we know thanks to set photos from the currently-in-production Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 that not only will Jessica and Luke be back, but they’re bringing fellow Netflix ex-pat Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist (Finn Jones) with them. So it’s reasonable to think that all this is teeing up is a plot point for D:BA S3, as we like to call it.
But hey, how about we be unreasonable, instead? What if this tease isn’t just setting up a new status quo for Luke, Jessica, and Danielle in the series they’re already appearing in, but another series entirely?
This isn’t entirely out of left field, either, for a number of reasons. First, there have been persistent rumors that Marvel has been looking into a Jessica Jones revival/spinoff of Daredevil: Born Again. While nothing has been publicly announced, it’s entirely feasible to believe that Marvel has been exploring reboots of all its Netflix shows in some fashion. After all, next week we’re getting a Punisher one-shot special starring Jon Bernthal, they could definitely do the same thing for the Cage-Jones family.
But far more intriguing is the reveal of the company name at the end. That’s because the original name of the comic book series that spawned Jessica Jones was titled Alias. And as early as 2010, it was reported Marvel was working on a series titled AKA Jessica Jones. Why do we bring this up? Well, because Marvel rebooted Daredevil: Born Again. It would make a certain amount of sense to reboot Jessica Jones as Alias Jessica Jones, or Jessica Jones: Alias Investigations… Or something better than that, I’m not the title police.
Point being, while they could just be weaving the story of Jessica and Luke into Daredevil, that show has a different main character. And while Born Again brushes up on law procedural in a superhero world… Why not Alias: Jessica Jones as a detective show in a superhero world? Why not, indeed?
Whatever Marvel is teasing here, we do need more Jessica Jones in our life — whether it’s “merely” more appearances in Season 3, a full-blown spinoff, or something in between.
