After eight episodes of build-up, Daredevil: Born Again finishes Season 2 with a stand-out episode that may not make right many of the diversions of the previous seven episodes, but did deliver a killer hour of television that actually changed everything, maybe forever. So let’s recap all the big moments on “The Southern Cross,” and spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 8 past this point.
The episode actually starts with a quiet moment between Matt (Charlie Cox) and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) in New York institution/Indian restaurant Panna II, as they sweetly share dinner and happily gaze into each other’s eyes. It all seems like a dream Matt is having, and maybe it is — though the dream does become a reality later in the episode. Side-note (and not an insignificant one): this restaurant is also the safe spot where Karen and Matt met earlier in the season… Basically its their safe haven, their place to just be themselves and I guess get some samosas or something.
Anyway, in reality Matt is recovering from his gunshot wound last episode, getting patched up by Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter). And over on the other side of town, Buck Cashman (Arty Froushan) tells still-Mayor Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) he killed Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini). This is significant mostly because we now know that when they originally shot this scene, Buck was lying; the decision to kill Daniel was made during post-production, which continues to be wild. In fact, knowing that colors a lot of this episode, particularly the moments with BB Urich (Genneya Walton), who also had scenes with Daniel that were cut. Weird!
Then it’s over to Karen Page’s vigilante trila, which is in full swing bringing up the now full-on evil Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva) on the stand. She’s slickly manipulating the conversation, up until her ex-boyfriend Matt Murdock shows up, throwing her of her game. Matt, though, has a bigger trick up his sleeve: calling Fisk to the witness stand. While that happens, Kingpin has a fake-Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) across the street from the courtroom, ready to kill Matt when he emerges. Shades of Bullseye dressing up as a fake Daredevil in Daredevil Season 3? I’d say “likely.”
The showdown between Fisk and Murdock is epic, very much in the vein of the iconic “You can’t handle the truth” trial from A Few Good Men, though Fisk never really loses his cool here. Instead, he seems in control most o the time, lining up the Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF) in the back of the courtroom, and even pulling out a classic Kingpin “when I was a boy” in the middle of his speech. While Kingpin prevaricates on the stand, the real Bullseye shows up across the street and takes out the AVTF members, including the faux Bullseye. “Poser,” says Dex before taking up the sniper gun himself. He may have balanced the scales the last episode, but Bullseye gonna Bullseye.
Taking a brief sidebar in the judge’s chambers, we then get a neat scene where Fisk whispers in the courtroom so that only Matt can hear, leading to a fun moment where he answers Fisk out loud — but of course, nobody knows what Matt is talking about. The thing is, our faithful hero has one trump card, and it becomes pretty clear what it is going to be early in the second part of his questioning of Fisk… Though as a viewer, you certainly don’t think it’s going to happen. It does, though, as everyone in the city (including Jessica, who is protecting Lili Taylor’s Governor Marge McCaffrey) watches: Matt Murdock reveals his secret identity.
“You are a fool,” Fisk says as he realizes what Matt is about to do.
“No, I’m not,” Matt says. “I am Daredevil.”
Naturally, nobody believes him, so he immediately throws his baton, bounces it off several walls, and catches it. With Matt revealed as Daredevil, a witness who can prove Fisk was behind the destruction of the Northern Cross and has been lying about everything the whole time, the case is dismissed and Karen is set free. In the aftermath, Marge dismisses Fisk, though there’s still a process to go through before he can be officially removed from office. And before that happens, as he exits the court Bullseye takes his shot — shooting Buck, who protects Fisk, in shades of Matt saving Fisk from Bullseye’s shot in Season 1.
That brings us into the endgame, with Fisk holing up in the courthouse with his loyal (and some unloyal) followers, addressing the city on camera and finally becoming the Mayor Fisk that BB has been depicting in her “City Without Fear” videos. Consequently, BB reveals herself as the person behind those videos and urges everyone to take their city back. While New York divides itself into sides, we do get one surprising turncoat: Cole North (Jeremy Isaiah Earl) who takes down AVTF head Powell (Hamish Allan-Headley) and lets the protestors into the courthouse.
Seeing it all coming down, Heather punches the slimy prosecutor Hochberg (John Benjamin Hickey) in the throat, and Fisk unilaterally rejects the Attorney General’s offer to allow Fisk to go into exile to defuse tensions.
Another side-note here, on some interestingly confused politics… While Fisk refusing to leave office is clearly a nod to some of America’s greatest fear of what President Trump would do after his first term (and lets be honest, will do after the current second term), seeing a bunch of outrageously dressed protestors storming a government building is clearly the imagery of January 6, 2021, when pro-Trump protestors stormed the Capitol Building. So a little bit of both-siding on the part of Daredevil: Born Again, with Kingpin clearly bad, the protestors clearly good, but those things both being bad IRL. Confusing!
It doesn’t really matter, though, because what happens next is electric. Kingpin, fully unsheathed and unhinged, pops out in front of the protestors with a gleeful “boo!” and then proceeds to utterly destroy them, giving us a hallway fight from Kingpin as he wrecks shop, tossing protestors like rag dolls and breaking their bones. Meanwhile Daredevil fights his way though his own hallway accompanied by Angela del Toro (Camila Rodriguez), now fully displaying White Tiger powers as she crawls the walls.
It all ends in the main hall of the courthouse where the protestors overwhelm Fisk… With Daredevil saving him. The two huddle on the balcony, and Matt tells him that they have to break this cycle. While Matt’s deal a few episodes back was that they both leave the city, that’s not quite what he means this time, and Fisk finally accepts the deal.
Later, the city is quiet. Fogwells is reopning soon, and we cut back to Karen and Matt having dinner in Panna II, for real. It seems for a moment that they finally might get a happy ending, but of course not. Police sirens approach, and Matt is arrested… After all, being Daredevil, and everything he’s done has been less than legal; not to mention working as a lawyer while also a vigilante, often on two sides of the same case. With a quick “I love you” Karen and Matt are separated, and he’s taken to jail.
Then, it’s check-in time as everyone gets new/old status quos. BB is welcomed into Ben Urich’s (and Karen Page’s) old office at the New York Bulletin by another surprising return Netflix character, editor Mitchel Ellison (Geoffrey Cantor). Heather, you’re not going to believe this, becomes — get this — Muse, putting on the mask of her attacker as she sees herself unmasked in the mirror. Lady Muse incoming, an event nobody could have predicted, oh, say, two months ago. Matt is in jail with the AVTF, meaning things are probably not going to go very smoothly for him. And Fisk is on the beach alone in exile, finally finding that peace that Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer) wanted before her untimely death.
But wait, there’s more! Specifically, one more surprise at the end of the episode… The return of Luke Cage (Mike Colter). In the closing moments, Jessica and her daughter Danielle (Annabelle and Isabella Ivlev) are in a mostly empty office, when a man enters, and sure enough, it’s Luke. He’s back from working with Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard) overseas. “Are you okay?” Jessica asks. “Yeah. Work was… Different over there,” he answers. But he’s free now, because Mr. Charles found someone else to do his dirty work: Bullseye. And as the door closes on the office, it’s revealed they’re in Alias Investigations, the name of Jessica’s detective firm.
That’s it! Season over! Luke, Jessica, and none other than Danny Rand (Finn Jones) — who does not appear in the episode — will be back in the currently filming Season 3, which should likely premiere next March. We’ll see you then, same Daredevil time, same Daredevil place.
