DC launches Batman villain contest.
This is Comic Book Club News for May 1, 2026.
Jason Aaron Writing DC’s Absolute Universe Event:
Earlier this year at ComicsPRO, DC announced an Absolute Universe event series will be hitting later this year. And unlike most events, it will be a focused miniseries that does not spill out into other titles, nor does it require reading other books. Now we know a few more details, including who is writing it: Jason Aaron.
Scott Snyder, writer of Absolute Batman, revealed the news to during a signing, saying, “It’s gonna be Jason [Aaron] who is writing the actual thing, but we’re all plotting it together. So Deniz [Camp] is there, we’re all in the room making it together… It’s like a big team effort.”
Not only that, but Snyder also teased that Martian Manhunter, one of the odder ducks in the Absolute line, won’t be shoved to the side. In fact, as Snyder explained, “he plays a big role in the event… He helps bring everybody together.”
So there you go! That’s pretty much all we know at the moment, though given the timing one might expect to find out more at San Diego Comic-Con in a few short months. Or the next time Snyder does a signing.
Marvel Celebrates Disability Pride Month:
Marvel is celebrating Disability Pride Month in July with a four-part backup story running through multiple titles, and variant covers spotlighting the publisher’s various characters with disabilities.
In the story by Marieke Nijkamp and Andrea Di Vito, Daredevil, Misty Knight, Echo, Hawkeye, Silhouette and Finesse come together to save Colleen Wing from a “deadly threat” that, based on one variant cover by Jamie McKelvie, seems to be Hobgoblin.
Meant to highlight “strength in community” and that we are “not the limitations of our bodies,” the story will run through issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, Fantastic Four and Wolverine, hitting weekly starting July 1.
DC Launches Contest To Design Next Batman Villain:
You — yes, you — could design the next great Batman villain, joining the ranks of Joker, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, and of course, Condiment King. That’s because the publisher is launching DC’s Building Bad Sweepstakes in conjunction with the launch of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. And yes, the new character will appear in September in the game — but will debut in the pages of DC’s comics.
The contest launches this week, and runs until May 31, 2026, with the winner working with DC to “select character traits” for the villain, as well as having “a role in naming the new DC character.” Which likely means they’ll veto “Boaty McBoatface,” but you never know.
The eventual character will debut in Detective Comics #1113 in September, then appear in Batman #14 — and have that cameo as a LEGO version in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight “as part of post-launch downloadable content (DLC).” And finally, you’ll also get to see the character pop up in a DC GO! webcomic, which is “targeted for Batman Day (September 19, 2026).”
So get to it, folks. Me personally I’m pushing for “The Podcaster” but we’ll see what happens.
