Why Did Homelander Kill Firecracker On The Boys? Is Firecracker Dead?

After a relatively (for this show) quiet week last week, this week’s episode of The Boys, titled “One-Shots,” was a total bloodbath. And while there are a lot of big deaths we could go into, there’s one in particular that’s worthy of some discussion: spoilers past this point, but in the closing moments of the episode, Homelander (Antony Starr) horrifically murders Firecracker (Valorie Curry).

Does Firecracker Die In The Boys?

This is one you can probably figure out for yourself, but given the show has thrown an immortality-inducing version of Compound V called V1 into the mix, I’m going to let it slide. Yes, Firecracker is dead on The Boys, and she’s not coming back. Not a dream, not an imaginary sequence. She does not have V1 in her blood, and is not recovering from how Homelander takes her out: suddenly and violently shoving her head on the eagle statue in his bedroom in Vought Tower, leaving her impaled there, a stunned expression on her face.

So yeah, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) came back from getting infected with the Supe virus back in the season’s second episode, “Teenage Kix,” because he has V1. Firecracker does not… All she was able to do was shoot little firecrackers out of her hands and be racist. RIP, Firecracker, hope you’re rotting in hell.

Why Did Homelander Kill Firecracker?

As to why Homelander killed Firecracker, there’s the reason given on the show, and the bigger thematic reason that the show is playing with. Let’s talk about those in order.

In the final scene of the episode, Homelander approaches the conflicted Firecracker, first asking her “how’s sex with my father,” referring to the fact that Firecracker has been hooking up with Soldier Boy. He doesn’t really care about that, though, he’s mostly playing with his food. The actual issue is the pillow talk they have after sex, or as Homelander explains, “Your inner turmoil when it comes to me and… Jesus. Are you thinking of Jesus when you’re praising me? … You’re supposed to worship me. Love me. And me alone.”

While Homelander initially tells Firecracker to pack her things and go like she’s a contestant on Top Chef, she makes a critical error and tells him that she’s the only one who has ever loved him. “Everyone else here, they’re scared of you, or they want something from you, but I have always loved you, for you,” Firecracker says. She then makes another mistake, calling him a “man” but pivots from that as well, recalling how she “felt blessed” when Homelander used to breastfeed from her last season. Side note: this show, man.

She continues, explaining that she felt cast out by him, which was worse than anything else. “Hell, I was even with Soldier Boy because of your reflected light,” Firecracker says. “Please. I love you. And we all need love, don’t we? Even god?” Homelander brushes back her hair, looks her in the face, and shoves her onto the eagle statue, walking away as she stares, dead-eyed.

Okay, so that’s how he kills her, but why? This part is a guess based on context, but Homelander doesn’t want love; he wants fear. He’s also the most insecure man alive, and having someone who actually is utterly devoted to him, and loves him is something he doesn’t understand… It works against his inner, egomaniacal narrative that not only is he the only person who matters in the world, but that everyone is betraying him at every turn. Someone who devotes themselves to him entirely works against that.

Basically, think about any bad habit you’ve ever had; it’s easier to go “well, I’ll never break that habit” then actually do it. With Homelander, that’s leading to his own destruction. He wants everyone to love him, but can’t accept love when it’s given to him… He needs to take it, and own it, and crush it to feed the idea that only he can do what he does. Everything needs to be broken, just like him.

Thematically, The Boys — and this episode in particular — is always playing with where you draw the moral line. How far will you go for what you believe in? And in this hour, Firecracker gives up everything for Homelander. She throws her old pastor under the bus, painting him (incorrectly) as a pedophile on national TV. She throws out her old Jesus action figure. And she even tells Homelander she’s utterly devoted to him. The problem is, it’ll never be enough for him, and by rejecting goodness and real faith (whatever you think about organized religion), she pledged herself to a false, vengeful god.

So while this is more answering the question “why did the writers kill Firecracker” rather than why did Homelander, the reason is because Firecracker gave up herself for something that has no worth. She lost the part of her that was human, which is directly contrasted with — for example — how Butcher (Karl Urban) turns a new leaf with Hughie (Jack Quaid) in this episode after seeing him save his dog, Terror. Religion, ultimately, is believing in each other to make better choices; Firecracker made worse ones, and died for her sins.

You’re probably up to speed on this bullet-point, but in case not: Firecracker is played by Valorie Curry. She kicked off her career guesting on six episode of Veronica Mars, followed by a role as Charlotte in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.
