On this week’s episode of Daredevil: Born Again, “The Hateful Darkness,” and spoilers past this point: iconic Netflix character Brett Mahoney (Royce Johnson) is back! Wait, who is that? What’s going on? Huh?
Okay, calm down, buddy. It has been about a decade since we last saw the character on Netflix, so you’d be forgiven for not knowing who this is… But in fact, Johnson appeared as Mahoney on 18 episodes of Daredevil, an episode of Jessica Jones, and nine episodes of The Punisher. Basically, he’s a Netflix staple that has yet to pop up in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Until now, of course.
To jump back, Mahoney was introduced as a beat cop who somewhat reluctantly helped out Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) in Daredevil Season 1. Thanks to his help with capturing The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) in Season 2, he was promoted to NYPD Detective, and continued to be reluctantly helpful to the whole band of vigilantes in NYC. In fact, usually thanks to their help, he’s been able to arrest Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) multiple times, and helped curb some of The Punisher’s darker impulses.
Though it’s been a bunch of years, not much has changed with Mahoney once we catch up with him in Born Again. He’s still a police detective, and still helping vigilantes. This time, he frees Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) from prison for five minutes in heaven (read: an alleyway) with Daredevil. That’s pretty much the whole thing, though it’s possible we could see him again in next week’s finale; or in a more significant role in the currently filming Born Again Season 3.
For even more context, Mahoney was created in 2007’s Marvel Comics Presents #1 by Marc Guggenheim and Dave Wilkins, before heading to the small screen. So all told, he’s a relatively new addition to the world of Marvel.
As for Johnson, since appearing on the Marvel/Netflix shows, he’s guest-starred on Blindspot, For Life, FBI, The Blacklist, Chicago P.D. and did three episodes on House of Payne.
