Back when writer John Layman appeared on our live podcast a few weeks back, he teased that he and his Chew collaborator Rob Guillory were working on a new book. And that when we we heard the concept of the new book, we’d laugh. Well: Layman was correct, as that book is called Ghostbrawler, it’s about a Boxer who dies, comes to back to life, is able to see and touch ghosts, and now goes to haunted houses to beat them up for money. So yes, correct, I did laugh.
Not much is known about the book at the current time other than Layman and Guillory are on it, and what Layman shared online:
“Boxer is killed in ring,” Layman posted on BlueSky. “Resuscitated. Now able to see ghosts. Now able to TOUCH ghosts. Starts business going to haunted houses, and beating the fuck out of ghosts. GHOSTBRAWLER. From the guys who did CHEW.”
While it seems likely that Layman and Guillory will bring this book to Image Comics, which previously published Chew, that’s TBA as of this writing. And if this is the same book Layman teased on our podcast, back at the beginning of March, then at the time they already had the first arc written, with three pages penciled.
In addition, Layman teased that more Chew will be coming later this year, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the end of the lauded series. So when will Ghostbrawler hit? Before or after the Chew reunion? The Chewunion if you will? And does brawlin’ make him feel good? We’ll likely find out soon enough.
