Last week, Daredevil: Born Again strongly intimated that Luke Cage (Mike Colter) from the Netflix version of the series was lurking around the corner. And as of this week’s episode, “The Hateful Darkness,” we know why Luke isn’t in New York teaming up with Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) to fight Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio)… At least for now.
Spoilers past this point, but in last week’s hour we caught up with Jessica, who is living… Somewhere suburban with her daughter, Danielle (Annabelle and Isabella Ivlev). She’s in this pastel nightmare land because Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard) has been recruiting folks with superpowers, though Mr. Charles also attacked her at home so who knows what’s going on there. In any case, Jessica laid out for Daredevil that Charles had someone close to her.
This week? We found out that person is, indeed Luke Cage. Where is Luke? He’s “overseas, doing the lords work,” according to Charles, who unhelpfully reminds Jessica that, “Don’t forget, I’m the only one who can connect you with Luke.”
While that could mean a lot of things — does Charles have Luke fighting wars? Battling Sharon Carter’s (Emily VanCamp) The Power Broker? A third thing — and could imply more super-powered individuals like Danny Rand (Finn Jones) are in the mix as well… It mostly serves to establish that Luke and Jessica are together after the events of their respective Netflix series ended, and they have a daughter together. In the comics, Danielle has a mix of Jessica and Luke’s powers, which could explain (maybe) why Jessica’s own powers are the fritz.
But I digress. The bigger thing this does is explains why Mike Colter isn’t on Born Again, and hasn’t been for two seasons… He’s been overseas working for Charles. That said, and future spoilers past this point, it sure seems like Jessica, Luke, and Danny are all back for Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, based on set photos. So whatever situation has Harlem’s defender on assignment seems to have wrapped up by then. Will he show up to save the day in time for Born Again‘s finale next week, though? Stay tuned.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 premieres on Tuesday March 24 on Disney+ at 9pm ET / 6pm PT, with new episodes weekly except for the second week which has two episodes to make room for a Punisher one-shot special episode on May 12.
