Daredevil: Born Again might be dead again if the current reported ratings decline continues. Per recent data from the tracking firm Luminate, the show has lost about 50% of viewers from Season 1 to Season 2.
Specifically, in data shared by the firm with ComicBook (not to be confused with this site, which is Comic Book Club, an entirely unrelated thing), viewership dropped from over 8 million views in the first five weeks in Season 1, to over 4 million views in the first five weeks in Season 2. What constitutes a “view” is not entirely clear (it could be people turning something on and then immediately shutting it off, or autoplaying). Perhaps slightly more accurate by modern streaming rating report standards is “minutes watched,” which was 1,440,004,000 in Season 1 for the period, and 652,000,000 in Season 2.
That’s still a lot of minutes, but also of note the show has not broken into the Top 10 either on Luminate’s list that publishes weekly on Variety, or in Nielsen’s independent rankings of shows. That’s rare for a second season show like Daredevil, which has the advantage of hours/minutes stacked up from the first season for when Season 2 debuts. And you can compare that to, say, Wonder Man, which popped up in its first week on Nielsen and then disappeared. But it did pop up.
So, what does this all mean? Is the sky falling? Is Daredevil: Born Again canceled? Well… No. The third season is already filming/dropping massive spoilers all over New York City, and we’re getting a spinoff one-shot special for The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) on May 12, 2026.
What this does put in doubt, though, is whether Disney/Marvel will want to continue with Born Again past a third season, if the ratings decline continues; particularly as the general rule of thumb is contracts get renegotiated and usually more expensive after a third season. It also puts in doubt whether a teased Jessica Jones spinoff could happen as well, given a spinoff of a declining show might not be a sound business decision.
ComicBook (again, no relation) points out that Born Again Season 2 is critically acclaimed with 90% on Rotten Tomatoes versus 87% for Season 1. But I’ll counter that Season 1 clocks in with 224 reviews, on par with most major movies; Season 2 dropped to 102 reviews. That’s still robust for a TV show, but these things do flag exponentially over time (watch Season 3 drop to 30-40 reviews), and also Rotten Tomatoes is not a good scale to judge anything given its rotten/fresh dichotomy is too binary (sorry, it’s true).
The short version here is that whatever you think of Born Again Season 2, it’s just not capturing attention the same way as Season 1 did, and even that wasn’t setting the world on fire. The decision to not reboot the show but tie it directly to the Netflix series makes this, essentially, a fifth season of a series, which is when audiences tend to flag and drop off, if not earlier. Add in the other Netflix shows also tying in, and you have the same sort of problem big-screen Marvel has: feels like too much homework, whether that’s true or not.
Ultimately, we’ll see how this all pans out over the next two weeks. Perhaps folks are waiting to binge the whole thing, and as the finale is — no spoilers — a certified, game-changing banger, perhaps it’ll win some of those lost viewers back. For now though, we’ll just have to hope nobody gives Daredevil: Born Again any pineapple juice.
