DC Vs. Marvel: Which Characters Will Cross Over Next?

For the first time in decades, we’re being treated to regular crossovers between DC Comics and Marvel Comics, mashing up the universes of the “Big Two” and bringing together all our favorite heroes and villains. And while we’ve already had multiple one-shots and digital spinoffs, the big question, because comics is always about this: what’s next? Who will be the next characters to cross over between DC and Marvel?

To take a little step back before we get to the speculatin’, in September of 2025, we got Marvel’s Deadpool/Batman, followed by DC’s Batman/Deadpool in November. Between the publication of those two issues, we got two surprise digital comics on the Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe Infinite platforms: Thor/Shazam! and The Flash/Fantastic Four.

More recently, last month we got Superman/Spider-Man from DC, and on April 15 we paid our taxes with Spider-Man/Superman from Marvel. Again, between those two we got two digital comics: It’s Jeff/Aquaman and Supergirl/Blade.

Now that you’re all up to speed, while this isn’t quite enough to establish a pattern, given these have been best-sellers (inasmuch as we know sales info, which is “not much”), there will likely to be more. And to further speculate, every six months seems to be a pretty good pattern for these, so it’s reasonable to think the next crossovers will hit some time around September/October again. So what could they possibly be? Let’s throw some ideas out there:

Wonder Woman/Captain Marvel

In a way perhaps both the least and most likely possibility, since we’ve already gotten headlining team-ups with Batman and Superman, why not Wonder Woman next? And if you’re teaming up someone with Wonder Woman, a top-tier character like Captain Marvel makes a lot of sense. Alternately, they could throw in Iron Man; or even Ms. Marvel to capture the youth demographic (?).

…But in some ways, since Wonder Woman (sorry) tends to sell way less than Batman, and even Superman, the bean counters at both companies could nix this one. Add in that we’ve already gotten a handful of Wonder Woman team-ups in these collections already, and even though it makes logical sense to work through DC’s Trinity, it also seems highly unlikely.

X-Men/Titans

1982’s The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans is generally considered one of the best crossover comics of all time, so doing a sequel would be hubris of the highest order. On the other hand, the X-Men have been curiously absent (mostly) as have the Titans (mostly) from these books, which tends to suggest they’re holding them back for some reason.

We could also get Wolverine/Harley Quinn or something bizarre like that (really, Wolverine and whoever) to fill that X-Men void. Or, if we’re rehashing, why not do JLA/Avengers again? That also would be hubris, because who could possibly match George Peréz?

Supergirl/Doctor Doom

While we’re talking crass cash-ins, this also seems unlikely, but with a Supergirl movie from DC and Doctor Doom all over the place thanks to Avengers: Doomsday, the publishers could push their two marquee characters to the forefront. Based on timing, the much funnier outcome would be Clayface/Doctor Doom, where they could both talk about their faces. I don’t really see this happening, but never underestimate the power of… [Ursula the Sea Witch voice] Media tie-ins!

Amalgam Returns

I’ve been speculating heavily about this since the publishers announced they were doing crossovers again, but this year is the 30th anniversary of the Amalgam Universe, the biggest crossover Marvel and DC have ever done. While the story itself isn’t necessarily beloved, we’ve already gotten one additional Amalgam character — Logo — and it seems an enormous missed opportunity to not have these mash-ups move from fun one-shots to some sort of event. Would they really do Amalgam Returns? Could we see more Spider-Boy and Darkclaw? Stay tuned, I guess.

Secret Crisis

Speaking of mash-up events, the finale of DC’s Doomsday Clock teased that on July 10, 2030, a “Secret Crisis” began, teasing a major crossover between the two publishers. This was likely hopeful thinking on writer Geoff Johns’s part, and he did recently write a short titled “Identity War” in Spider-Man/Superman. That story could take the place of Secret Crisis, or Marvel and DC could move up the timeline. In execution, an Amalgam sequel and Secret Crisis likely wouldn’t be that different. But in this case, it would be by Geoff Johns with art by Gary Frank. They may be a little too busy for this sort of thing, though.

Absolute Universe vs. Ultimate Universe

This is the big, outside possibility that actually would make headlines and rock the industry: if Marvel and DC mashed up their two blockbuster rebooted universes. My two cents, this seems less likely on DC’s end, as they’ve been very careful to curate what happens in the Absolute Universe. Marvel, meanwhile, is ending the Ultimate Universe in June, so while they may want to stick with that closure, a return for an event like this could be easier for them to manage (less ongoing continuity questions).

Look, would they do this? Honestly, maybe. These crossovers have clearly sold well, and they’ve been fun enough, but they haven’t really broken through into mainstream press the way one might expect. Making the Absolute Universe, which has indeed broken through into popular culture in a way that American comics have not since, well, Marvel’s original Ultimate Universe, fight the new Ultimate Universe? There’s your headlines.

Will it happen? Probably not. Maybe. I don’t know. But if it did, it would absolutely be the ultimate crossover of all time. Until the next one.
