Who Is Quinn On 'The Boys' Season 5?

The latest episode of The Boys on Prime Video, Season 5, Episode 4, “King Of Hell,” introduces a lot of elements that move the overall plot forward. But the hour also introduces a new character who seems key to the origin of Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles): Quinn, played by Kris Hagen. So who is Quinn, and why is he so important?

Spoilers past this point, but in the episode Soldier Boy and Homelander (Antony Starr) head to Fort Harmony; basically Soldier Boy’s version of Captain America’s Camp Lehigh. Naturally, things have gotten as twisted as usual in The Boys universe, with V1 — the original, super-strong version of Compound V — leaking into the ground and causing the plants to spore out of control. Those plants release a rage toxin (this is the simplified version) that made everyone become enraged and kill each other, with the exception of Patient Zero.

That would be Quinn, who Soldier Boy and Frenchie (Tomer Capone), who is immune to the rage spores because he’s used so many drugs, find attached to the wall of a lab, begging to die. Frenchie goads Soldier Boy, the “hero” becomes furious, and uses his Compound-V frying power blast to try and kill Frenchie… But Frenchie dodges, and it kills Quinn instead, clearing the spores and shutting down the rage “virus.”

That’s all well and good for context, but it doesn’t settle who Quinn was, and why he’s so important to Soldier Boy. So let’s speculate.

Who Is Quinn, And Is He Soldier Boy’s Brother?

The most popular theory, using clues in context? Quinn is/was Soldier Boy’s brother. This episode spends a lot of time fleshing out Soldier Boy’s origin, including the fact that he was a spoiled rich kid who had his dad buy his way into the Vought trials at Fort Harmony. Meanwhile, we discover that Soldier Boy’s brother was a decorated soldier, and with Vought wanting to test their version of V on the best of the best, it makes a lot of sense that Quinn would have been recruited naturally, with Soldier Boy, jealous of his brother, wanting in on the action as well.

Kris Hagen, the Toronto-based actor who plays Quinn, looks sort of like he could be Jensen Ackles’ brother. Though perhaps of note, he’s not currently on the announced cast list for Vought Rising, the prequel series that will further detail Soldier Boy’s origin.

In fact, somewhat working against the theory that Quinn is Soldier Boy’s brother is that we’ve already been told only five people survived the V1 trials at Fort Harmony: Soldier Boy, Klara Risinger, aka Stormfront, aka Liberty (Aya Cash), Bombsight (Mason Dye), Private Angel (Elizabeth Posey), and Torpedo (Will Hochman). If you’re at all confused about any of those names, Stormfront we’ve met before on The Boys, it seems likely we’ll meet Bombsight shortly as The Boys are hunting him down, and Angel and Torpedo are original to the prequel series.

Granted, there are a lot of cast members with unannounced roles in the show… It’s possible Hagen could be playing the Spore-Zombie version of Soldier Boy’s brother, and another actor will play Quinn on Vought Rising. Or Quinn gets shunted from the trials to make room for Soldier Boy, and only later is experimented on with the V1.

…Or Is Quinn Someone Else From Soldier Boy’s Past?

Alternately, there’s an argument to be made that despite the show pointedly mentioning Soldier Boy has a brother for the first time and then we meet a character we’ve never met before, Quinn is not Soldier Boy’s brother. In the context of this episode, the main takeaway is that Soldier Boy deeply cared about someone from his past, and accidentally kills him.

In the closing moments of the episode, Soldier Boy is crying over what he did, and tells Homelander to “do it already,” aka kill him. Homelander doesn’t kill his dad, but this is a big humanizing moment for the Supe… Soldier Boy has a heart after all, something that wasn’t apparent on any of his previous appearances.

Could Quinn be a random lab tech? A scientist? Merely someone who was nice to Soldier Boy once? Perhaps. As is, all we know is that Soldier Boy cares about someone and lost him this episode. Whether that was his brother or not, we’ll have to wait until Vought Rising premieres to find out.
