Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is back in NYC this week on Daredevil: Born Again. And in Season 2, Episode 6, “Requiem,” we discover that — spoilers past this point — not only does she have a daughter named Danielle (Annabelle Ivlev and Isabella Ivlev), likely with Luke Cage (Mike Colter), but she’s also losing her powers.
…Which raises an important question: what are Jessica Jones powers anyway? It’s been at least seven years since her show wrapped up on Netflix. And if you haven’t kept up with the Marvel Comics source material, you might be foggy (no pun on our dear, departed avocado at law) on the details of what she can do.
So consider this a primer on Jessica Jones’ powers, and some speculation on why she might be losing them.
What Powers Does Jessica Jones Have? What Is Jessica Jones Power?
In the comics, Jessica Jones is super-strong, super-durable, and can fly, something she used to become the superhero known as Jewel. That’s pretty much the whole thing! On the Netflix show, she doesn’t exhibit flying powers, but is strong and durable, though not at the level of, say, The Hulk or anything. She also is able to leap pretty far, but that’s likely part of the super-strength thing, versus flight.
How Does Jessica Jones Get Her Powers?
Again, comics Jessica and TV Jessica are pretty different. In the comics, driving back from a family vacation at Disney World, her dad crashed into a truck carrying radioactive materials. Her family died, she was put in a coma, and woke up with her powers (also of note, she was friends with Peter Parker pre-Spider-Man, and had a crush on him).
In the TV show, her family was also killed in a car accident, but she was given her powers while in a coma by IGH, a company testing a procedure meant to accelerate healing. That procedure gave Jessica her powers, which developed and grew over time until she became the caustic hero we know and love.
Does Jessica Jones Lose Her Powers In The Comics?
Your biggest question is probably why Jessica is losing her powers, and whether that’s setting up some big comic book storyline. The short answer? No. The slightly longer answer is that Jessica’s flight ability in the comics degraded over time, so in the current continuity she’s mostly just strong and durable, a la the TV version. But the reason for her losing her flight is really just “getting older.” There’s no big twist, no secret villain, nothing to adapt here. Which is annoying, because there are no clues, right?
Why Is Jessica Jones Losing Her Powers? Does It Have To Do With Her Daughter?
Well, wrong. This is speculation, but there is one big clue as to what’s going on with Jessica’s powers… They’ve been on the fritz since she had Danielle. Which likely means that either she’s “doing a Spider-Man 2,” aka losing her powers through a crisis of confidence. Or alternately she’s transferred some of her powers to Danielle.
While that does not happen in the books, Danielle does inherit her father’s unbreakable skin, and her mother’s strength… Something she uses when she becomes the Captain America, 30 years in the future in the alternate timeline of Earth-15061.
That doesn’t explain what’s happening on TV, but it could be as simple as Jessica and Danielle sharing the powers, or Jessica having given up some of her powers (since they were given to her by IGH) through the umbilical cord. Or something, I don’t know, I’m not a doctor.
Whatever it is, it’s definitely a hiccup to her fighting in this week’s episode… But it’s also too eye-popping a plot point to not follow up on in some way. Stay tuned.
