The big headline for this week’s episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 6 “Requiem,” is that Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is back where she belongs, on TV in the streets of New York. But the more eye-opening tease in the episode? What might be up with Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Jessica’s Netflix co-hort, Luke Cage (Mike Colter).
Spoilers past this point, but to be clear, the words “Luke Cage” are never said in the episode. However, there is some work put into establishing his current status quo in the world of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), what he’s been up to since the Netflix series ended, and why Colter might not be on screen on Daredevil: Born Again.
First, a few status quo check-ins since it’s been several years since Luke Cage and Jessica Jones streamed on Netflix. When it comes to Luke, the second season of his show ended with him taking control as the “sheriff” of Harlem, a role that could be good, could be bad, maybe a little bit of both. As for Jessica Jones, Season 3 of the series ended with her staying in New York as a Private Investigator. That’s pretty much it! Other stuff happens, but important to note that after Jessica and Luke slept together in Jessica Jones, he didn’t show up on her series until briefly in the series finale.
That’s very different from the comics, where Luke and Jessica get together, get married, and have a daughter named Danielle; not necessarily in that order. So, what about on Daredevil: Born Again?
Luke Cage Is Likely Jessica’s Baby Daddy… And Trapped By Mr. Charles
It’s important to remember here that Born Again isn’t strictly Netflix continuity. While this current season has been leaning further and further into cementing what happened on Netflix, they’re allowed to make changes since it’s now MCU. That said, since we last saw Jessica, she now has a baby named Danielle who looks a lot like the Danielle in the comics, played by Annabelle Ivlev and Isabella Ivlev.
Later, while Jessica and Daredevil catch up on a roof, she explains that Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard), who works for Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), has been recruiting people with superpowers. While he didn’t get Jessica (whose powers are on the fritz since having Danielle), she did get someone close to her.
Look, to be clear, this could be anybody. Maybe she’s talking about — shudder — Iron Fist (Finn Jones)! But given the clues in context it seems likely that Jessica and Luke got together, they had Danielle, and CIA dude Mr. Charles made some sort of deal with Luke to keep Jessica and Danielle safe.
That’s a lot of speculation, but it also would explain why Luke hasn’t been turning up in these episodes. They also clearly moved out to the suburbs, which is part of it. But whereas Jessica heads back because Kingpin’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) thugs attacked her at home, whither Luke (if the dad is Luke, which it probably is)? The answer is wherever Charles has him.
There’s one more big piece of evidence to support this, but I’m going to put another spoiler warning here:
Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, And Iron Fist Are In Daredevil: Born Again Season 3
So yeah, whoops. Back at the beginning of the month, the paparazzi spied a few folks on the set of the currently in production Daredevil: Born Again Season 3… Ritter, Colter, and Jones. So while we can’t say whether they’ll be in Season 2 as of yet, it looks like we’re getting a full-on Defenders reunion in the upcoming third season of the series.
Given the set-up in this episode, as well as the fact that in the comics Kingpin’s reign as Mayor of New York City is brought down by none other than Luke Cage, who becomes Mayor after him — and is still Mayor of New York City as of the current continuity — it seems inevitable that Luke would pop up somehow, even if there’s another mayor before him on TV and in the movies.
But what about Danny Rand? Will he just be Iron Fist, or is Jessica Henwick’s Colleen Wing — who ended Iron Fist Season 2 as the Iron Fist — along for the ride as well? For now, let’s just keep our eyes peeled for Harlem’s invincible hero. The rest we can wait to find out next year.
