Eagle-eyed Marvel fans already spotted this one from a mile away, but Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 6 “Requiem” makes it official: spoilers past this point, but it sure looks like Sheila Rivera (Zabryna Guevara) will be the next Mayor of New York in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Need a little more context than that? Okay, fine, understandable. In the official trailer for the Spider-Man fourquel, there’s a quick shot of Spider-Man (Tom Holland) receiving the key to the city. And it sure looks like Sheila is the one giving it to him:
While nothing in this quick shot involves someone calling Sheila “Mayor” nor is there anything to indicate she isn’t just stepping in for Mayor Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), there’s another big tell that there’s been a shift in the hierarchy of power in Gracie Mansion… Wilson Fisk famously doesn’t like vigilantes, including ones dressed like spiders. So it’s highly unlikely Kingpin would approve of Spider-Man at all, let along give him the key to the city.
How do we get there from where we currently are in Daredevil: Born Again, though? Well, this latest episode gave a big, honking clue. In fact, it’s not even really a clue… The Governor of New York, played by Lili Taylor, tells Sheila she wants her to be the next Mayor. Mind you, it’s not as simple as kicking out Wilson and subbing in Sheila, but as teased in the episode there are some political shenanigans to come. Meaning we’re heading to the endgame with Mayor Kingpin, and likely ending Season 2 with Sheila nabbing the Mayor’s seat, setting up her status quo in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Whether Sheila has a full-on plotline in the upcoming movie? TBD. It could just be that quick shot during a montage or otherwise, to tie the universe together. But hey, either way, it’s good to get confirmation that in a few short months, once Sheila is in charge it’ll be a brand new day for vigilantes in New York City.
Now, as for whether Daredevil himself will appear in the movie? That’s something we’ll wait to confirm for another day.
