After last week’s muddled and confusing episode of Daredevil: Born Again, things are back on track in Season 2, Episode 6, “Requiem.” Is that mostly thanks to — spoilers past this point — the return of Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) for the first time since 2019, and an absolutely brutal fight between Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio)? Yes. But also that’s why we watch this show, so come on, let’s recap the big moments, shall we?
Picking up from the end of last week’s episode, in case you were confused about whether Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer) died of a previously undisclosed pineapple allergy? Well, no, she died of getting stabbed in the noggin with a piece of glass. While Dr. Merati (Pej Vahdat) tries to console Wilson with some metaphysical stuff about the mind and the body, Wilson is a little more about the body. He seemingly hugs the surgeon before — to borrow a term from the movie Hoppers — squishing him.
Clearly, things have moved on from Kingpin playing the Mayor game, and it’s up to Buck Cashman (Arty Froushan), who returned very quickly from his upstate trip burying a body with Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini), to clean up the damage (i.e., dead doctor).
Vanessa’s funeral is held, and everyone in New York is in mourning… Except Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard), who discovers Wilson has cleared out the cache of weapons the CIA had contracted him to transport… So it’s time for the CIA to go after the Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF).
And then, because enough isn’t going on, we cut to a house in the suburbs where a young girl we later find out is named Danielle (Annabelle Ivlev and Isabella Ivlev) is playing. The AVTF attacks, but gets their butts absolutely handed to them by… Jessica Jones. And smart comic book fans may have clocked this, but if Jessica has a daughter named Danielle, you know who the father is? At least in the books? Luke Cage (Mike Colter), baby.
Back in New York, we finally catch up with our title character as he and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) fret and argue about saving Bullseye’s (Wilson Bethel) life. Also, if you thought Matt mentioning he knows a nurse last episode was another Netflix tee up for a surprise appearance by the Night Nurse herself, Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson)? Er, sorry. he meant Soledad (Ashley Marie Ortiz), a character who has been appearing regularly on this TV series.
Karen and Matt are very much on two different sides of this argument, with Karen thinking they should let Bullseye die for what he did back in Season 3 of the Netflix series (she doesn’t frame it up that way because she’s not Deadpool, but you get the gist), while Matt is all “blah blah mercy I go to church blah blah.” <– direct quote
Despite Wilson clearly going full “doctor squish” there’s still time for some politics on the show. Buck is spending some time trying to get the lieutenant governor to turn on Governor Marge McCaffrey (Lili Taylor), while GovMarge is trying to turn Sheila Rivera (Zabryna Guevara). Specifically, Marge wants Sheila to be Mayor, not Wilson Fisk. And mild future spoilers here, seems like it works: Shiela sure seems to be the Mayor of New York in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, based on the trailers. So it’s interesting to see that particular plotline start here.
Buck, meanwhile, is also tightening the screws on Daniel now that they’ve had body burying buddy bonding time. Specifically, now that Buck has figurative and literal dirt on Daniel, he needs him to catch BB Urich (Genneya Walton) in the act of snagging info from the Mayor’s office for her secret “take down the mayor” account. Why Buck, a guy who seems to be fine murdering whoever, needs evidence on BB is a mystery for another time.
…Because it’s over to a classic rooftop chat between Jessica and Matt. Turns out that Mr. Charles has been recruiting people with superpowers for some covert reason — perhaps for Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus)? — and Jessica wouldn’t join, but he did get someone close to her. Though we’d love that someone to be Patsy Walker (Rachael Taylor), this is more likely an explanation as to why Luke Cage isn’t around. We also find out that since Danielle was born, Jessica’s powers drop out sometimes. That immediately becomes a problem when the two decide to invade the warehouse holding Kingpin’s stolen weapons, kicking some serious butt (until Jessica’s powers flare out), and blowing up the warehouse.
Meanwhile, back at the government party, Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva), who is clearly extremely slowly turning into Muse (Hunter Doohan), steals some cufflinks from Fisk — which makes one wonder if she’s also angling to be Vanessa. We don’t get an answer to that, but Buck does show up, goads her into telling him what Muse did to her, and in example of what you should not do, encourages her to choke him. Clearly this is leaning to Heather becoming a baddie, but I sure wish they’d get there quicker!
Okay, back to Daniel… While heading to Staten Island to visit his mom for his birthday, he tells BB a secret and makes her promise not to leak it. The secret? Fisk isn’t running for reelection. Naturally, this is not true, but if it leaks, Daniel knows BB is the leaker which means Buck can kill her. Again: he can kill her whenever he wants? Maybe get Heather to do it, she loves choking people.
They get to Staten Island — which is Fisk territory, just like how it’s Trump country IRL — and BB is about to send the leak until she sees Daniel’s childhood bedroom. She clearly decides not to leak the fake news, and even almost kisses Daniel, but it’s too late: he found the SD card with dirt on Fisk that was slipped into her coat a few episodes back. Great job to BB for not checking her coat pockets? Weird. This is also when Buck calls, so whatever Daniel feels about BB may be taken out of his hands.
Back in Manhattan, Powell (Hamish Allan-Headley) is on to Saunders (Felix Torrez-Ponce), the AVTF member who offered to work with Karen and Daredevil a few episodes back. Speaking of that duo, Bullseye wants Karen to kill him, and he’s more than happy to comply until Daredevil knocks the gun out of her hands. Clearly, the duo are at odds, even if they want the same end goal: destroy Fisk.
Mr. Charles has a different end goal, and to do that he goes and visits Governor Marge, drawing a slightly dirty connection to the otherwise squeaky-clean Governor. But probably more on that as we head into the endgame of the season.
The rest of the action takes place in two locations: City Hall, which has become split between protestors against Fisk and mourners for Vanessa; and Fisk’s Red Hook basement, the one where he held the dude who slept with Vanessa in prison, and currently contains that white painting everyone loves so much.
Starting with City Hall, Karen broadcasts the confessions about Fisk’s prison on the wall of the building, which has a much greater impact in the show that even more horrible conditions in ICE facilities being revealed has had in the real world. As the crowd gets more and more unruly, Powell kills Saunders, and blames it on the protestors, escalating things into a full-blown riot. In the midst of everything, Karen tries to help the kid from the bodega who gave BB her SD card, and it leads to Powell capturing Karen.
The bigger deal, though? Matt and Wilson finally meet face to face for the first time this season. After a stylish shot of DD’s helmet shadow on Fisk’s face, the hero offers a deal: they both leave New York. Clearly, this isn’t about actual politics, it’s about the two of them, and the only way to save the city they both love in different ways before it’s destroyed is to, I dunknow, destroy Italy or something. Regardless, Kingpin does not agree, and the two have a fantastic fight scene that it would feel like this whole season was building to, except we have two more episodes to go. Instead, it leads to the destruction of the white painting, Wilson’s last connection to Vanessa.
With Karen captured, and Kingpin unleashed, what does this mean for New York as we head into the final two episodes? And will Jessica Jones (and Luke?) be back? Stay tuned.
