It’s time for another episode of America’s favorite trip to metaphorical (and sometimes literal) hell on HBO‘s Euphoria. And this week we’re welcoming back two more characters on Euphoria Season 3, Episode 2, “America My Dream”: Hunter Schafer’s Jules Vaughn, and the late Eric Dane’s Cal Jacobs.
Before we get to the full recap for the episode, and spoilers past this point, let’s do a little precap to the recap to set the stage. On last week’s season premiere, “Ándale,” we picked up five years after the end of Season 2 — aka, an easy way to skip Euphoria: The College Years. Rue Bennett (Zendaya) was conscripted into becoming a drug mule for the shockingly menacing Laurie (Martha Kelly), a job that also suckered in Faye Valentine (Chloe Cherry), and introduced us to Laurie’s second-in-command, Wayne (Toby Wallace). Wayne, by the way, has a crush on Faye, though TBD whether it’s reciprocal.
Sick to death of working for Laurie, Rue made a big move while delivering drugs to strip-club magnate Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), no relation to Alamo Drafthouse: she proposed working for him, instead. Bad news for Rue: Laurie sent her to Alamo with drugs laced with fentanyl, causing one of Alamo’s strippers to OD. Worse news for Rue, he decided to see if she was trustworthy enough to work in one of his clubs (which Rue says is her dream) by shooting an apple off her head. Hey, it works! Go Rue!
Meanwhile, Lexi Howard (Maude Apatow) is working as a PA on a nighttime soap called LA Nights, and seems to be doing pretty well at it, working for the showrunner, Patty Lance (Sharon Stone), who seems to have a basic instinct for Lexi’s notes. Will Lexi have a sliver of a chance getting on the writing staff? We’ll have to save some Total Recall jokes for later. Troublingly, Lexi is avoiding talking to Fezco (Angus Cloud), who keeps trying to call her. Given Cloud tragically died in real life after Season 2, I’m not sure how they’re going to resolves this one but we’ll see.
Maddy Perez (Alexa Demie) is also hanging around the soap because she’s working on the bottom rung of a talent agency — but seems pretty good at it. In particular, she’s managing Dylan Reid (Homer Gere), the hunky star of the show. How long until they start having some LA nights of their own? Stay tuned.
Last but not least, Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney) and Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) are getting married, and nothing is going awry with that. Just kidding! It’s all bad. Nate has taken over his father’s construction company after he went to jail for having sex with underage kids, but is clearly way over his skis trying to set up a retirement community called Sun Settlers. Meanwhile, Cassie is trying — also unsuccessfully — to become a TikTok influencer, while cajoling Nate into making their wedding epically expensive (think: $50k on flowers). In order to pay for things, she’s decided to join OnlyFans, which Nate only agrees to if she won’t show her face.
That was all Episode 1, by the way! Whew! This show is exhausting! Okay, now that you’re all caught up, let’s jump into Episode 2, “America My Dream.” Will it become an American nightmare? If you’ve been watching this show for two seasons so far, you know the answer is “definitely.”
Euphoria Origins
Things start off with Maddy’s “origin” story — or at least how she got her job. The way she did it? Approaching her future boss in a restaurant, laying out all her qualifications. “Well that’s refreshing,” Ms. Penzler (Rebecca Pidgeon) says, and when her phone starts ringing, Maddy expertly picks it up, getting the job instantly… But is stymied by COVID.
That extends to Cassie, as well, who starts trying to become a TikTok influencer when the platform was picking up during the pandemic. Maddy is, meanwhile, flouting COVID rules by taking photos of a woman on the beach — Katelyn (Bella Podaras) — and starts introducing her around town, leading to a million followers for the influencer.
Maddy, continuing to play the game expertly, encourages Katelyn to show some feet, underboob, basically sex it up a little. And she does, setting up her own photo studio and even helping by doing the proper photoshop clean-up. She’s also managing her social media (read: OnlyFans) presence.
Maddy’s masterstroke? Getting Dylan to hook up with Katelyn after the duo convene on the Friends couch on the Warner Bros. lot. Unfortunately for Maddy, Penzler is not a fan of a “porn” star who shows her “beaver” dating her star client. Once she finds out Maddy is making a commission, it gets worse, and Maddy is forced to ditch Katelyn.
Katelyn, though, is making millions on OnlyFans, and as Rue’s narration explains if Maddy had left Penzler and pursued Katelyn, she would have been “successful.” It’s okay, Maddy has a second chance at fame: Cassie.
Shooting The Skeet
Over to Rue herself after the titles, Alamo is shooting skeet on his porch and laying out his confused position with Rue: who is she? Where does she fit into his organization? The answer at least initially is the very non-metaphorical “knee-deep in pig shit,” and cleaning up evidence that a stripper died in his place (named Tish, played by Emma Kotos). Tish, of course, isn’t the first person Rue knew who ODed, “but it was the first death I helped cover up.”
Alamo gives Laurie a call to hash things out, but Laurie doesn’t think it’s their fault Tish died. It is their fault, though: Wayne forgot to clean the scale they use to measure their drugs, and some fentanyl got on the pills. So surprisingly, it wasn’t the “kill the messenger” thing that we thought it was… It really was an accident. As recompense, though, Alamo wants Rue, which enrages Laurie.
“You’re a real fucking pig,” she shouts, continuing the pig… Metaphor? Honestly, I don’t think Euphoria exists on the level of metaphor, but c’est la vie.
On The Strip
Rue gets $300 and a promotion, to a side-of-the-road strip club called the Silver Slipper. For Rue, this is great news: she gets to see naked ladies AND sell drugs. When the guy running the club — Big Eddy (Kadeem Hardison) — acts surprised Alamo hired a lady, Rue quips, “Eh, yeah, basically a dude.” And she’s already got one of the strippers picked out as her plaything (or potential).
It’s interesting and surprising to see Rue not just in her element, but… Happy?
At the same time, it also gives director/writer Sam Levinson a chance to work in a stripping montage where the stripper puts cocaine on her nipples and a guy snorts the drugs right off before she sucks his dick. Hey, it’s not all about the emotional journey on Euphoria.
And to drive that home, not only does it turn out there’s a fair amount of surveillance going on, but we get a quick cut to Rue cleaning out the toilets. Not so far from cleaning the pig sty, after all. Rue gets a fat stack of cash, and leaves the club that’s “fully nude, always lewd.” And she ends the evening banging the stripper she likes in her car.
“Angel is a hellcat,” Rue says, referring to Priscilla Delgado’s character. “But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss Jules.”
Jules Of Denial
…And that’s when we finally found out what happened with Rue and Jules. Rue saw Jules at art school, they spent time together, but it was “never the same.” And then Rue relapsed, begging her mom to let her come home. The kicker to that call? It’s a voice message.
“And to be honest?” Rue says, “I haven’t been sober since.”
Jules, by the way, gets no lines as we cut back to the club where Alamo sits talking again about pigs (hey, it’s a theme) — interrupted by Angel, who is wondering what happened with Tish. Alamo doesn’t tell her, of course, but that seems like a powder keg getting ready to explode.
While Alamo and his friends continue to party, Angel, crying calls Tish, also leaving a voice message. Because of course, Tish is dead. Rue hears Angel, but doesn’t hear Alamo, who is pissed Angel seems to be standing up to him.
While Rue seems to be doing a great job delivering money to Big Eddy, there’s another red flag: he has a safe behind a nudie painting. Though Rue turns around while he opens the safe so she doesn’t see the combination (unless she did see it in the mirror across the way), this definitely seems like the sort of temptation that will become too much, before too long.
High School, Part 2
We then surprisingly cut to Rue and Maddy talking about how Rue definitely doesn’t care about Jules, though is concerned about Jules having a Sugar Daddy. Maddy, though, is getting dressed in some lingerie, and reveals she’s got a meeting. With who? Cassie?
“Man, I miss high school,” Rue says.
“I don’t,” Maddy answers.
Cassie is, meanwhile, stepping up her OnlyFans presence, with ice cream dripping off her naked breasts, in a wet t-shirt, and naked except for a catcher’s mitt. Oh, and dressed like a baby (i.e. in a diaper), sucking on a pacifier.
Cassie goes to meet Maddy at The Peninsula by the pool, and if you’re curious what the purpose of this storyline is, the old school Hollywood music tips it off: Levinson is playing with A Star Is Born type tropes, and likely teeing up a classic Hollywood tragedy.
Maddy, meanwhile, plays it up, impressing Cassie with her style and pretending she’s a really powerful agent.
“You look amazing,” Cassie says, stunned.
“So, here we are,” Maddy says back.
As they reminisce over Aperol spritzes, Cassie sort of apologizes for hooking up with Nate in high school, with Maddy forgiving her. Later, Cassie, wasted on three Aperols, basically begs Maddy to take her on as a client, with Maddy acting like she’s not interested. The problem is that Maddy thinks Cassie has no taste. And the videos she’s making are “desperate… You’re trying way too hard instead of just being.”
It’s easy to interpret this as the world’s view of Sweeney, right? Seeing what they want in her, instead of whatever she sees in herself. As for the show? Maddy makes sure Cassie is okay with nudes, which sure seems like a trap to me. Perhaps Maddy isn’t so over Nate and Cassie cheating in high school after all.
Cal-ifornia Knows How To Party
Cal, now clearly out of prison, comes to visit his son. While Nate assures Cal he’s doing great and fine, it’s wild to see the man who was sent to jail for child porn is the level-headed one in the room. Nate’s business partners — or prospective ones — aren’t buying it either. He owes a man $500,000, and the next week it’ll be $600,000. So the man suggests Nate pay him $100,000 by Friday.
“Yeah, no problem,” says Nate, though of course it is very much a problem.
Back at home, Nate, making meatballs, is dug into by Cal, who is five or so beers in. Cal doesn’t approve of Cassie being on OnlyFans, and doesn’t see how him having sex with men and denying he’s gay, and filming it, is in line with what Cassie is doing. Introspective, the characters on this show are not.
Fallen Angel
Back the clurb, Rue tries to calm down an enraged Angel, who is throwing shoes (seriously, who throws a shoe?) and desperately wants to know what happened to Tish. Rue, of course, knows what happened… And tells Angel she ODed. Angel thinks it can’t be true, but Rue doubles down, telling her it was fentanyl.
Angel sobs and hyperventilates, still not believing, and begins to “spiral.” She’s drugged out instead fo doing dances, falling asleep in her car, and Rue even finds her vomiting her guts out in the bathroom.
Alamo gives a choice: go to rehab, or “I kick her to the curb.” Alamo will even pay for rehab, and Rue is intrigued by being on the other side of an intervention. The eager Rue is even told she’ll get a promotion for getting Angel to agree, but the “feisty” Angel absolutely loses it despite Rue explaining rehab is essentially a “paid vacation.”
Rue eventually convinces her, and while driving to rehab, Angel seemingly says what may be the theme of the whole season:
“You know more people go missing here than anywhere else in America. It’s like there’s a big magnet under the soil attracting evil.”
Grills Night Out
During a party by the pool, while Nate tries to get/trick more investors, Cassie shows off her pictures, with a friend grossed out — but intrigued — by her being an “adult baby.”
Things start to spiral out of control when the friend tells her husband, with him promising to “look into it.” He talks to Nate, and Nate demands to see her phone. “Because the whole town is talking about how you’re spread-eagled on the internet,” Nate tells her.
They start to fight, and it’s basically the same fight as last episode: she wants the flowers, he wants her to delete the account. Cassie basically wins.
Then in a weirdly comic sequence, the maid asks Nate if he wants to keep any of the food, and then runs down everything with Nate either saying yes or no to everything from hot dogs to potato salad. And the kicker, Cassie says she deleted her OnlyFans in exchange for Nate paying for the flowers. “I wanna save those pigs in a blanket,” he says as the friends awkwardly leave this hell house.
That night, Cassie tells Nate that Maddy is helping her out.
“My Maddy?” Nate asks.
“No, my Maddy,” Cassie answers.
Nate is surprised they’ve reconnected, but Cassie reveals she’s working with Maddy — and invited her to the wedding. He wonders if it’s for revenge, but Cassie explains that not everyone is in love with. Nate laughs.
Hope Springs Eternal
Rue arrives at Hope Springs, the rehab Alamo is sending Angel to, and it seems… Weird. The desk clerk is busy playing a video game and is uninterested in Rue or Angel. The latter, for her part, is scared, but Rue promises she’ll come back and pick her up.
A nurse silently arrives and brings Angel back into the nearly dark hotel, Rue watching her lover disappear around the corner. It’s hard to tell what Rue is thinking at that moment, though she likely sees herself there. And weirdly, there’s no paperwork to fill out, or anything for Rue to do… Perhaps this rehab isn’t about rehabilitation after all?
Rue calls Alamo’s weird second-in-command Bishop (Darrell Britt-Gibson), who tells her to move on… Though someone is watching from a car in the distance. Yuh-oh!
Fountains Of Wayne
Back at Laurie’s Wayne is banging Faye, which likely settles the “do they like each other” debate, when a horrible screaming comes from above.
“Is that a dinosaur?” Faye asks. But nope, it’s this episodes animal of choice, an enormous pig in Laurie’s living room, with a flag that says “Remember the Alamo.”
Jules And Rue, Rue And Jules
Back in New York, Rue arrives, and takes the elevator with Jules, who has a “new look.” Rue may protest she’s just there because she’s worried, but the show knows the duo are their Romeo and Juliet, and it’s hard not to feel the intense pull between the two on their elevator ride, even with only a laugh shared.
Rue goes to Jules’ palatial apartment — or rather her Sugar Daddy’s apartment — and is clearly out of place in her jacket and plain t-shirt.
Jules, meanwhile, puts on a robe and makes a drink.
They talk about where Rue is living, and she tells Jules all about where she’s working. Rue explains she’s “California sober” and avoids things that might destroy her life.
“And yet you showed up here?” Jules asks.
Jules isn’t sure they were ever good together, and Rue agrees. “So I assume the whirlwind romance thing is off the table,” Rue jokes.
Jules calls the man she’s seeing her boyfriend, and Rue questions whether it’s just a financial arrangement. Where’s the boyfriend? At his place with his family.
Unlike the elevator, this is all icy and filled with tension. Rue lies on the floor, drinks, and pushes Jules too far.
“You can’t just show up after all this time and think everything is going to be the same,” Jules says, running off, before emerging, her robe mostly undone. “I’m gonna take a bath.”
Rue says she’ll leave, and Jules adds in a coquettish voice, “You’re not going to keep me company?”
Our hero thinks for a second, and then goes to join her. Rue and Jules. Jules and Rue. It’s back on, but will it be good for either of them? Knowing Euphoria the answer is: absolutely not.
