Marvel Comics Hit With Layoffs As Part Of Disney Cost-Cutting Measures:
On April 13, Disney hit the wider company with reportedly over 1,000 layoffs. And while that included cutting nearly the entire visual development team at Marvel Studios, it also hit Marvel Comics.
Per The Beat, publicity has also been hit hard at Marvel, with multiple higher tier employees at Marvel Studios let go as part of the cuts. And that seems to include Marvel Comics as well, though no specific employees have come out and announced their layoff as of yet. Of note, The Beat hears that Marvel Comics cuts may include the publicity or marketing department. And a thread on Reddit indicated layoffs hit Marvel Comics editorial, as well.
As is, The Wrap reported that as much as 8% of the workforce at Marvel may have been impacted by this round of layoffs, though Disney disputed that number.
Regardless, this is terrible news. To editorialize a little here, whenever a company has an incoming CEO — as Disney does with Josh D’Amaro replacing Bob Iger — their first move is always to cut the work-force, rather than to figure out how to use the human resources they already have in house. And those CEOs certainly never look at their own salary for cuts, like, for example, the $9.75 million payday D’Amaro got for his new position, as well as his $2.5 million a year salary.
Our thoughts go out to those impacted.
Brian K. Vaughan And Marcos Martín’s Barrier Gets Collected:
Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martín’s timely sci-fi immigration comic Barrier will be collected by Image Comics in one trade collection, hitting stores next month.
In the Harvey Award winning story which was first posted digitally on Panel Syndicate, and then in single issues in 2018, per a press release, “When the lives of Texas rancher Liddy and Honduran immigrant Óscar collide at the U.S.-Mexico border, neither can understand the other’s words, but both are forced to rely on trust when they’re thrust into an unimaginable encounter.”
The book is told in both English and Spanish, and will be presented in the original “widescreen” format it appeared in online. Barrier joins The Private Eye (also published in a similar format), as well as the recent collection of Spectators by Vaughan and Niko Henrichon, which was also syndicated on Panel Syndicate.
Barrier hits comic book stores on May 20, and book shops on June 16.
Liam Sharp Returns To StarHenge:
Anything Liam Sharp does is a must-read, and that extends to his wild, epic sci-fi story StarHenge for Image Comics. And now, Sharp is back with StarHenge Book Two: A Kiss for Atticus.
Said Sharp via press release, “StarHenge has always been more than just a time-and-realm-hopping fantasy series. It’s about creativity, the medium of comics, and telling stories. But it’s also about finding our way when we feel lost.”
In the four-issue book, per the release, “Amber, Daryl and Merlin appear stranded in strangely familiar realms, without any real sense of who they are or how they got there. Will they be able to find each other, and solve the mystery of their surreal captivity?” But more importantly, will there be kissing? The title certainly seems to indicate that.
