You’d be forgiven for thinking that nearly any character on Prime Video’s Invincible can come back from the brink of death. After all, and spoilers past this point, in the latest episode, “Don’t Do Anything Rash,” Invincible (Steven Yuen) has his eys gouged out, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) is punched straight through the midsection, and Oliver (Christian Convery) has his jaw ripped off and arm torn off… But they’re all going to be fine. There is one character who is not going to be fine, though, because Invincible Season 4 killed off Great Thaedus (Peter Cullen) in the most horrific way possible.
To recap briefly, in the episode our heroes launch a last ditch attack on Viltrum, in order to surprise Grand Regent Thragg (Lee Pace). They do not surprise him, and instead alongside the unstoppable Viltrumite launch a counterattack that leaves our heroes on their back legs. While Thaedus reveals he is not a frail old man, he suffers a harsh wound once his back gets ripped open. That doesn’t stop him, Nolan, and Mark from flying through Viltrum, destroying the planet in the process.
Enraged, Thragg does the one thing he backed off from doing years earlier: he kills Thaedus. Specifically he tears Thaedus’s head clean off, then crushes it for good measure. So yeah, while the characters might come back from some pretty bad stuff (like floating unconscious in space for an indeterminate amount of time), Thaedus is 100% dead.
Does Thaedus Come Back In The Invincible Comics?
…But like other characters on the show who might come back in flashback, like Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), could Cullen voice Thaedus once again? The short answer is “sure, why not?” It’s entirely possible we could hear Cullen’s voice again on the show in some fashion.
What about in the comics by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker, though? Is there a miraculous resurrection? The answer there is “no,” as Thaedus’s death happens pretty much the same way in the book. However, there are flashbacks to Viltrum that feature Thaedus. As a minor caveat, one of those is a version of the sequence we saw at the beginning of the episode, which happens in Invincible #102. There’s actually a good chance we may see this same sequence of events with additional info in later episodes of the TV show, all tying to a pretty big secret about Emperor Argall (Frank Welker).
But as for in the book, other than those flashbacks (there’s another one in Invincible #144), we don’t meet an alternate universe version of Thaedus, or a clone, or a twin, or anything of the sort. He’s dead. RIP, Great Thaedus.
