‘The Boys’ Season 5 Reveals Ashley’s Superpower, And It’s A Harry Potter Twist

Valorie Curry (Firecracker), Colby Minifie (Ashley Barrett) The Boys Season 5

Ever since the Season 4 finale of The Boys on Prime Video, fans have been wondering what superpower Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie) has, when she shockingly injected herself with Compound V to save her own life. Well, as of Season 5, Episode 2 “Teenage Kix” we finally know the answer, and it’s a twist right out of Harry Potter. No, not virulent transphobia.

Spoilers past this point, but Ashley has telepathic powers, and is able to read other people’s minds. Or rather, the other her is able to do that… Just like Professor Quirrell in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, a book that if you bought years ago is a-okay to keep on your shelf but if you buy now is helping fund writer JK Rowling’s ongoing campaign to harm the trans community, she’s got a second face whispering to her on the back of her head.

The season premiere, “Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite,” reveals she can read minds, and that skill at least in part has vaulted her all the way to the position of Vice President, sitting alongside her new husband Oh-Father (Daveed Diggs). The second episode slowly teases out that, as fan expected, Ashley’s powers are — this is a technical term — “not cool.” She’s hearing voices whispering to her, and when she’s finally alone in the back of a car, whips off her wig to reveal her mostly bald head, and a second Ashley on the back of that head.

The bigger twist here is that Second Ashley is not her Voldemort, a character whose tendency to attack children and fascist tendencies should have taught the creator of the character a thing or two about what makes you a bad person but I guess not. Instead, this Second Ashley is her Jiminy Cricket, telling her all the things she needs to hear about doing good in the world; but is too scared to say out loud (mostly).

The Second Ashley, which seems to be the source of the telepathic abilities, tells her that there’s still time to do the right thing… That Homelander (Antony Starr) is taking things too far. He’s already set up detainment camps, dissolved multiple government agencies, and deported Chappell Roan. But now he’s planning on incarcerating anyone who aligns themselves with the revolutionary Starlight (Erin Moriarty)… Or disagrees with him in any way. Second Ashley says that First Ashley should have left with A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) when she had the chance, but she’s still the Vice President. She still has time to make things right.

Ashley does not do that, at least not in this week’s two episode premiere. But Ashley’s new superpower, and specifically her second face (who she threatens with floating on her back in the tub again), points to a way out of this whole situation. If Ashley finally steps up and becomes President, she can do the right thing. So far? Over four seasons? She hasn’t. But we’re in the final run of episodes, and it looks like Ashley’s redemption story may be incoming. It’s far too late to redeem JK Rowling, who has damaged her legacy with her cackling, real world villainy. When it comes to Ashley’s second face, though? There’s still time to turn things around. Literally, and figuratively.
