After two years of anticipation, Invincible on Prime Video finally revealed the mole who has been working against the Coalition of Planets and for the Viltrumite Empire. And it’s definitely not who you’d expect… Unless you read the Image Comics book by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker.
Spoilers for Invincible Season 4, Episode 6 “You Look Horrible” past this point, but in the episode we find out the mole is none other than… Data Twin #2 (Fred Tatasciore). Wait, who? Well, there are two characters called Data Twin, who work at the entrance to the main hall of Thaedus (Peter Cullen) and the home base of the Coalition. They’re the guys always working on computers when characters enter, essentially desk clerks. Unbeknownst to Data Twin #1 (Jay Pharoah), Data Twin #2 has been in the thrall of Thragg. (Lee Pace) And in this week’s episode, he leaves a small window in the planet’s defense shields so the Viltrumites can enter and wreck everything.
Thragg’s attack isn’t successful — he’s pushed back by Invincible/Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), Omni-Man/Nolan Grayson (J.K. Simmons), and Kid Omni-Man/Oliver Grayson (Christian Convery). But the damage is done, and the mole is revealed.
In one of the climactic scenes of the episode, Data Twin #1 is accused of the betrayal; but reveals it’s Data Twin #2, shooting him in the head. Don’t worry, he’s fine, and sobbing admits he’s been betraying them for years. The reason? He knew the Viltrumites were going to win, and he didn’t want to die. Simple as that!
He confesses (under duress) that Thragg is calling the rest of the Viltrumites back home to rally. Thaedus smiles, and realizes that if they strike now, they can end the war, then pick off the rest of the Viltrumites, one by one. So Data Twin #2’s betrayal was for naught, and The Coalition is headed to Viltrum to finish the war.
How Did The Mole Reveal Work In The Comics? Who Was The Mole In The Books?
We’ve gone into detail on this before, but the reveal is pretty much the same in the comics, though there were far more clues to indicate the mole was Thaedus. Short version is that it seemed like Thaedus had killed Allen the Alien (Seth Rogen), then revealed himself to be a secret Viltrumite after ripping off his beard, and could still be aligned with his old Empire. That mystery was strung out for four years before it was revealed Data Twin #2 was the actual mole, and Thaedus is, indeed, the rebel leader he claims to be.
As for Data Twin #2, his fate is similar here in the TV show to what it was on the page, with the twist that Thaedus thought Nolan was the mole/betrayer… Which only doubled down on the idea that it was Thaedus who was setting the Coalition up for defeat, and framing Nolan. Instead, by the end of Invincible #74 they had cornered Date Twin #2, shot him in the head, and gotten him to confess the same info he offers on TV.
So yeah, the TV show pretty much matches up to the comics, with a few changes of how the scenes play out. And that’s pretty much for Data Twin #2… If you’re looking for a big trial episode or something? Sorry, probably not.
