How Is Soldier Boy Alive In The Boys Season 5? It's All About V-One

There’s a big shocking death in The Boys Season 5, Episode 2, “Teenage Kix” but — and spoilers past this point — it seems to be immediately reversed by the end of the episode. So if you saw that shocking cliffhanger and are wondering how Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) survived the Supe virus? The answer is all about Compound V.

To be clear, this is speculation based on the first two episodes of the season, as well as some key info dropped in Gen V Season 2 about a new/old version of Compound V called V1 or V-One. At the time, I speculated that the reveal of this OG version of the Supe-making formula was setup for the Vought Rising prequel spinoff that features Soldier Boy and Stormfront (Aya Cash). While it still could be that, it seems more likely it’s directly feeding into the events of The Boys Season 5.

To take a quick step back, most of “Teenage Kix” is spent with The Boys realizing they need to test out the new, souped up version of the Supe virus to see if A) it’s strong enough to kill Homelander, B) if it’s contagious to humans, and C) if it will have the nasty side effect of killing every Supe on the planet. They decide to test the formula of Teenage Kix member Rock Hard (Andrew Iles), but are ready for Soldier Boy when he arrives to stop them. In the process, the virus seemingly kills Rock Hard, another Teenage Kis team-member named Jetstreak (Dylan Colton), and Soldier Boy dies as well.

…Or does he? While his son Homelander (Antony Starr) is distraught over sending his father to die, the episode ends with Soldier Boy sitting up in his body bag. Whether this is rigor mortis (we wouldn’t put it past this show), a zombie Soldier Boy (we really wouldn’t put it past this show), or him surviving the virus is TBD. Though I tend to personally think the latter.

If he did survive, and Rock Hard and Jetstreak are dead, then… How?

V1 aka V-One Is The Original, Stronger Compound V

In Gen V Season 2, a lot of the plot revolves around the healing and return of Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater), one of the scientists who helped experiment with Compound V. The substance was created by the extremely Nazi Frederick Vought during World War II, and given to his wife Klara (later known as Stormfront, also a Nazi). Vought defected to the United States when the Germans started to lose the war, and helped create Soldier Boy. Cut to 1967, and Godolkin also injected himself with V1.

As Godolkin explains, while regular Compound V gives you strength, superpowers, durability, and other abilities (healing, etc), V1 makes you functionally immortal. That didn’t help Stormfront, who was horribly burned, mutilated, and killed by Homelander. But it’s fair to speculate this is exactly what saved Soldier Boy’s life… Keeping him dormant for a while as he healed.

To be completist, other than V1 and Compound V, we’re also seen V24, aka Temp V. That was a variant that allows users to gain powers for 24 hours, though given the introduction of V1 it’s possible that was also the twenty-fourth variation on the formula.

Who else has V1 coursing through their veins? We’re told that Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) has whatever version of V1 Godolkin was able to reproduce over the decades in her body. The other product of his experiments, who already potentially has it genetically passed down from his father? Homelander.

If all this is accurate, what that means is that the current version of the Supe virus, which Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and the gang think is effective on all Supes, will actually not kill Homelander, Marie, Soldier Boy… As well as any other Supes who may have gotten it over the years (though that’s less likely given we’re headed towards the endgame).

Short version (and I’ll emphasize again this is all speculative based only on seeing these first two episodes)? V1 is a big roadblock for deploying the Supe virus, and likely saved Soldier Boy’s life. If Butcher finds this out, he may amp up the virus even more… Turning it from a lower tier Supe killer into the end of all life on the planet.
