Back in the series premiere of Daredevil: Born Again, fans of the Netflix series that preceded it were traumatized when Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) was murdered in the opening minutes of the series. Well, Born Again may have done it again as — spoilers past this point — it sure looks like Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer) has been killed by the end of this week’s episode, “Gloves Off.” Or has she?
To take it way back, Zurer has been a mainstay since the first season of the series, introduced as an art dealer who struck up a romance with Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). While the villainous Kingpin always has a lot going on, his devotion to Vanessa has been his guiding star, and Zurer again reprised the role in Season 3 of Daredevil (Fisk was in prison and only appeared in two episodes of Season 2). And again, Fisk’s one redeeming quality was loving Vanessa, who accepted her role as co-Kingpin.
Interestingly, the original production of Born Again recast the role with actress Sandrine Holt; but when Marvel rejiggered the production halfway through, Zurer was brought back as Vanessa, and played a crucial role in the first season… She was the one running Wilson’s criminal empire while he was off in prison (and in Hawkeye and Echo), and a large chunk of Born Again Season 1 was taken up with Wilson and Vanessa finding a new common ground after she cheated on him.
This episode? Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) is on the prowl, hoping to do “one good deed to even the scales” for all the bad in his life. In his mind, that’s killing Vanessa for making him kill Foggy in Season 1. Other than Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk, though, nobody knows that it’s Vanessa who Bullseye is gunning for… They all think it’s Kingpin. And indeed, Wilson even sets a trap for Bullseye by luring him to a charity fight night he’s set up, while sending Vanessa out of town to convene with the Governor of New York, Marge McCaffrey (Lili Taylor).
Unfortunately for everyone, Vanessa quickly comes back and shows up towards the end of the fight — just as Bullseye wanted. He attacks, everyone runs amok, and turning the tables, Vanessa shoots Bullseye. The latter picks up a glass monument being sold at the fight, throws it at Vanessa with pinpoint accuracy, only for Wilson to come in, swinging his champion’s belt and blocking the trinket, shattering it into a million pieces.
Bullseye collapses, the day is saved… Except then Vanessa turns around, and she has an enormous shard of glass from the broken collectible stuck in the side of her head. She collapses, and it sure looks like she’s died in Wilson’s arms by the end of the episode.
So is Vanessa Fisk dead on Daredevil: Born Again? You’ll have to wait until next week to find out (though one might note that the sixth episode is titled “Requiem.”) If she is dead, that’s curtains for yet another original Netflix character on the series. And it also means that Kingpin has lost the one thing that kept him grounded and in control. That means bad things for New York City, and really bad things for Daredevil.
