The Pitt on HBO Max already has a packed cast, with so many people on the floor of the Emergency Department (ED) that sometimes they leave and never come back. Well, now it’s time to welcome some more characters into the show, as this week’s episode added additional staff to the busy night shift: Luke Tennie and Sofia Hasmik.
We’ve already met several of the night doctors on the show, including Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy), Dr. Robby’s opposite who also seems to never, ever sleep. Also working nights is Lena Handzo (Lesley Boone), the charge nurse who takes over for Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa), and we saw earlier this season as a death doula, her second job. We’ve also seen the no-nonsense Dr. Parker Ellis (Ayesha Harris), the constantly-holding-an-iced-coffee Dr. John Shen (Ken Kirby), and night shift surgeon Dr. Emery Walsh (Tedra Millan). Oh, and also hunky nurse Mateo Diaz (Jalen Thomas Brooks), who has moved over to nights since Season 1.
That’s all well and good, but what about the new folks? Luke Tennie plays Dr. Crus Henderson (you need to say it like “doctor drake ramoray”), and the Shrinking star has traded in rage and food trucks on the Apple TV series for smooth confidence on The Pitt. Meanwhile, Sofia Hasmik, who is best known as Chrissy Beppo from The CW’s Superman & Lois, is looking a little lost as a new Armenian intern Nazely Toomarian (Hasmik is also of Armenian descent, just FYI).
It’s two more great actors in an already stacked cast, and it offers up an intriguing idea — particularly since versus Season 1’s forced extended shift through mass shooting is starting to show a little wear and tear in Season 2 (really? everyone needs to stay and file forms for three more hours?)… Why not extend the episode count of the show, and split the season between day and night shifts?
Look, at this point, the night shift is there for the beginning of the season and the end. The Pitt is a big enough hit that it could sustain a longer episode count. So why not grow the show to 24 or 25 episodes, and show a day in the life of the hospital? Half day shift cast, half night shift cast, and let the changeover feel a little more organic. Rather than forcing everyone to stay late (really, how many more times can we watch them extend their shift), move it on to the next shift. Sure Wyle and company would be off-screen (mostly) for half of it. But the night shift cast is so strong, they deserve to have their own plotlines fleshed out further. They also bring a very different vibe as Night Weirdos, as they clearly, proudly state in this week’s episode.
Would HBO Max ever do this? Or would they rather do a Pitt Nights spinoff? Probably they’re more likely to do the latter for budgetary and production reasons. But personally, I’d be all up for a regular-length TV season of The Pitt, and I think other viewers would, too. Come on, Dr. Crus Henderson has arrived, and he’s here to help get you home real fast. Can we get him more in on the action, please?
The Pitt Season 2 Premiere Dates And Episode Guide:
New episodes of The Pitt premiere Thursdays on HBO Max at 9 p.m. ET. While the full episode release schedule has yet to be officially announced, the season will run 15 episodes, and we currently expect it to run straight through without breaks, with one episode premiering per week.
We also expect that it will follow the same real-time format hour by hour as Season 1. While the first nine episode “titles” are confirmed it’s always possible there could be a twist at the end of the season. So full caveat here that this may change, TBA by HBO Max.
