Of all the characters we thought might return for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, there’s one that we thought was 100% dead for sure. But hey, it’s superhero stuff, baby, and that means all bets are off. Including the surprising reveal on the first of this week’s two new episodes, “Shoot The Moon,” that — spoilers past this point — Cole North (Jeremy Isaiah Earl) is back in action, baby.
…Which is extremely weird, because he clearly got blown to smithereens in Season 1. In case you forgot, Cole was a member of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF) which is running rampant through New York City at the behest of Mayor Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). He’s also the guy who shot White Tiger / Hector Ayala (Kamar de los Reyes) at point blank range in the head, killing him instantly, and framing The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) in the process.
When the AVTF attacked Matt Murdock in his apartment, they were instead greeted by a team-up between Daredevil and The Punisher, with Cole North confessing he killed Hector, had no regrets, and then got knocked out. Punisher tried to goad Daredevil into killing Cole, but the decision was taken out of their hands as another AVTF member threw a grenade into the apartment. The two heroes barely escaped, and it seems like the unconscious Cole North somehow escaped as well?
In fact, he has some mild scarring on his cheek when he shows up at AVTF leader Powell’s (Hamish Allan-Headley) metaphorical door, alive, begging for his job back. He explains that thanks to his horrible scarring (it’s really not that bad for a guy who was blown up by a grenade) he can’t get any more jobs. Powell lets him back on the force, and that is that.
It’s a really weird move from the show, honestly? While fans of the comics were a little confused how Cole North, a more recent character who has issues with Daredevil but is ultimately heroic was turned into a remorseless killer, it was also a weird move to definitively kill him off. And now it’s a third weird move to be like “grenades aren’t that deadly if you sleep through them.”
Anyway, whatever Cole’s role is in the season, he’s back and alive. And given by the end of the the third episode, “The Scales & The Sword,” it sure seems Hector’s niece Angela Del Toro (Camila Rodriguez) is the new White Tiger, perhaps Cole is back so someone else can kill him, for good this time.
