There are plenty of young heroes running around the MCU, and as of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 3 “The Scales & The Sword” we can throw another one in the “when are they going to do Young Avengers already?” pile. That’s because — spoilers past this point — Angela del Toro (Camila Rodriguez) officially embraced her identity as the new White Tiger.
If you don’t recall Angela from Season 1, she’s the niece of Hector Ayala (Kamar de los Reyes), the original White Tiger who was accused of murder and then murdered himself by the Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF), as part of a plot to frame The Punisher (Jon Bernthal). Angela tried to find justice for her uncle, only to get attacked and bled by Muse (Hunter Doohan).
Well, she’s back again in both episodes this week, as she and her Aunt Soledad (Ashley Marie Ortiz) try to shut down a situation with a bodega owner and a bunch of kids stealing beer… Only instead the AVTF imprison the bodega owner and Soledad. Angela goes to Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James) for help… But there’s only so much McDuffie can do while she’s also prepping for New York’s first Vigilante Trial.
Angela isn’t sitting on her hands, though… At the end of Episode 3, when Daredevil (Matt Murdock) is trying to free the prisoners being held in Kingpin’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) Red Hook facility, including Soledad and the bodega owner, who shows up but Angela? And she’s full-on wearing bits of Hector’s costume, as well as an amulet he claims gives him mystical tiger powers.
To be clear, Angela doesn’t show off any of those powers, though she does help get everyone to safety in an armored vehicle, and uses Hector’s knives to slash some baddie tires. It’s not the biggest hero debut of all time, but it’s clear: Angela del Toro is indeed the new White Tiger, even if nobody explicitly uses that name out loud.
Just like on the show, in the comics Angela was introduced as the niece of Hector Ayala by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev, in the pages of Daredevil in 2004. She has a different origin story, though, as well as superhuman strength, speed, agility, and healing. Whether TV Angela will start showing that off now that she’s stepped up to be a hero? We shall see. And just to say it: bring on the Young Avengers already.
