On this week’s Season 2 finale of Paradise on Hulu, a lot of bonkers things happen, from time travel to a tale of two Dylans. But the absolute weirdest thing that happens, and I guess spoilers past this point, is Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) reveals there are two Arby’s in the Paradise bunker. And I have a few follow up questions, if you don’t mind.
To explain further, in the finale as the bunker is collapsing thanks to a nuclear meltdown (too complicated to explain, don’t worry about it), Xavier and his wife Teri (Enuka Okuma) run through the underground suburban utopia of Paradise to try and find their children. Xavier has been living there for three years; it’s Teri’s first time visiting, as she was trapped in Atlanta when the world collapsed. As they run past the crowds, she is stunned by what she sees.
“There’s a sun?” Teri asks. “And a lake?”
“We also got two Arby’s and a ferris wheel,” Xavier says, explaining there’s a lot to catch up on and they don’t have the time.
Look, could Xavier, an extremely serious man, be making a weird joke? Sure. But it’s an extremely weird to make any jokes in the midst of everything going on, so for the sake of this article let’s take it at face value and say they revealed there are, indeed, two Arby’s in the bunker (I have less questions about the ferris wheel). And while it doesn’t matter because by episode’s end the bunker had exploded and collapsed, taking all the delicious meats with it, I still have some questions that need answering. For example:
- Why two Arby’s? Wouldn’t one be enough, particularly given there’s a population of 25,000 in the bunker? I guess if you’re on one side of town and say “nah, I’m not feeling like Arby’s” and then you walk to the other side of town and say, “you know what, actually, I could go for some Arby’s,” then having two Arby’s is a good idea. But otherwise it seems like overkill.
- Are there other chain restaurants in the Paradise bunker? Granted the way the show works billionaire Sam “Sinatra” Redmond (Julianne Nicholson) would have had to swear whole companies to secrecy, which seems tough. But they couldn’t at least get a Taco Bell for variety? Or maybe some chain that isn’t based on roast beef? Speaking of which…
- Where are they getting the meats? One of the big things about the bunker is they are in a bunker. There are eggs, so probably are chickens somewhere (see above re: why no KFC??). But as far as we know everything otherwise is vegan, so there are likely no pigs or cows. Arby’s is not top shelf meat to begin with, but fake, vegan Arby’s does, uh, not sound great.
- Is the Arby’s cheese sauce also nuts? They make a big deal about the nut-based cheese sauce on the fries at the local diner in Season 1, so much that it becomes a major plot point. What about Arby’s, which famously has cheese sauce on their sandwiches? Is that all nuts? This is nuts, but the actual, growing kind.
- Did the Arby’s fry cooks go down with the ship? We saw Sinatra sacrifice her life to save everyone in the bunker, but we never saw what happened in the two Arby’s. Did the fry cooks in either location stay until the last moment, making sure anyone who wants could get delicious spiced curly fries until the last moment? If so, we salute you, Arby’s fry cooks.
- Do they make the sandwiches with fingers, like in real life? Remember that? One time a kid found a piece of a finger in an Arby’s roast beef sandwich, which sure sounds like Walking Dead adjacent end-of-the-world s**t to me. Hey, maybe that’s where the Paradise Arby’s get the meats!
- Why even one Arby’s? Gotta be honest, I don’t have any interest in going to an Arby’s now, and I’m not in a bunker at the end of the world. And given Paradise is supposed to be a dream Heaven in honor of Sinatra’s deceased (but maybe not) son Dylan, it’s weird to throw a fifty-eighth tier fast food chain inside for the rest of eternity, let alone two of them.
…Hey, wait a second: Dylan loved horses. Horses… Horsey sauce… It’s all adding up! Anyway, tune in next time on Paradise Season 3, when they reveal that the time-traveling AI Alex has a hankering for Long John Silvers.
