While Legendary’s Monsterverse is always happy to smash a city or two, it’s not often they kill off a major character. But that’s exactly what happened on the latest episode of Apple TV‘s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Season 2, Episode 5, “Furusato,” as — spoilers past this point — the end of the episode killed off Hiroshi Randa (Takehiro Hira). But is he gone for good?
But first, though, some recap to set the stage… It was clear something was going to happen with Hiroshi when this episode featured flashbacks throughout his life. It finally showed his two families, including the birth of baby Kentaro, and why he left both of them for years. Turns out, it wasn’t entirely his fault, it was at least partially (lol) Tim’s (Joe Tippett), who convinced Hiroshi to leave his family once they rediscovered his father Bill Randa’s secret files, recovered after the events of Kong: Skull Island.
In the present, the action coalesces on Santa Soledad in Southern Chile, the place where Monarch discovered Titan X back in the day. While Apex Cybernetics wants to control Titan X using May’s (Kiersey Clemons) algorithm, the rogue Monarch squad led by Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) is working to shut them down.
What happens next is essentially several errors at the same time. It seems like May’s algorithm is working (even though she insisted it wasn’t ready). But thanks to her semi-mystical bond with the kaiju, Cate Randa (Anna Sawai) approaches the Titan in a trance. Hiroshi realizes his daughter, who he left years earlier, is alone facing down the Titan.
While it’s clear to the viewer — or at least, this viewer — that Titan X means her no harm, Apex freaks out, and fires on the Titan, frying the device they’re using to control it, and hurting the psychic bond May has with Titan X, as well. Hiroshi runs to May’s rescue as Titan X screams in fury. It overloads the algorithm, and calls its scarabs to it — severing its tentacle and breaking the connection with Apex.
Apex flees the site, and Titan X goes HAM, breaking everything in sight. While it’s not exactly clear what happens to Hiroshi, it seems that he’s mortally wounded by flying wreckage from the village that surrounds Titan X’s spawning grounds. Hiroshi, with his dying breath, apologizes to May, and sings with his mother, Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto). It’s the same song — not coincidentally, “Furusato,” the title of the episode — that May sings as well, and the three keep Hiroshi calm as he dies.
The grown-up Kentaro (Ren Watabe) is last to the scene, which is the real gut-punch… Of any of them, Kentaro is the one that got to know his dad the best over the past few years as they worked for Monarch together.
In case you’re wondering: yes, Hiroshi is dead on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. There’s no last-second Titan rejuvenation formula that pops up next episode or anything, and in fact the next episode is titled “Requiem” — the clearest TV indicator that a character is dead. As for whether Takehiro Hira has exited the show? All I’ll say there is you may have noticed that Monarch employs copious flashbacks. So smart money would say there are plenty of opportunities for Hira to pop up as Hiroshi in the past, if not the “present.” As is, though, RIP, Mr. Randa. You lived a life with at least one more family than most of us live.
