It’s hard to watch Daredevil: Born Again, which features Vincent D’Onofrio as the “only I can fix” Mayor of New York City, deploying his marshaled thugs throughout the city to round up minorities and not think of the current situation in America… Particularly, the parallels with President Trump and ICE. And Marvel would like to know that is very much, extremely so, a total accident.
Including in press notes for the series, the PR language expressly mentions the schedule for writing and filming a TV series, and indicates they know that viewers will think the Born Again Season 2 storyline was ripped from the headlines. But of course, it’s not… Season 2 was filmed waaaay back in 2025, far before ICE was abducting people and before Trump was President. [Checks notes] Hm, I’m seeing ICE was abducting people in 2025, and Trump was President. Interesting.
In any case, here’s what showrunner Dario Scardapane had to say:
“It’s humbling and, for lack of a better word, spooky. The writers—both the comic book writers from the 1960s and on and the writers in the writers’ room of this show—we’re all big students of history. In the first iteration of the Mayor Fisk story, both in the comics and in our first season, the idea was to track the rise of a powerful figure. So, we dove into the history of autocracy, the history of Nero, of how you create a broken society on the back of one extremely powerful individual.
“Everybody knows the past is prologue. So, when we dove into the playbook of autocracy and we wrote our story, did we know it was going to end up here? We couldn’t have. I mean, if I was this good at predicting stuff, I’d be writing, ‘Dario trips over a bag of money on the subway.’ I wouldn’t be writing anything about politics. You look back at stories that were told by Virgil, Frank Miller, Stan Lee, and Bendis and Brubaker, and then you try to add your own twist to things. But wow, this one, most everybody involved was a little bit shocked at how prescient it was.”
Added D’Onofrio, later in the press notes on the parallels, “I would like to say that I do, but it’s a completely different mindset when you’re thinking about real life and when you’re thinking about how to tell a story the best way possible, so I prefer not to connect the two. We all know, whoever you are and whatever you believe in, in this world we’re all struggling right now, but my job is to tell this story the best way I know how.”
Basically: haha whoops, please do not attack Disney or Marvel for anything, we’re just making our fun vigilante show that just happens to show a large man who looks and acts like Trump using his private police force with no oversight other than his own that looks at acts like ICE to round up anyone he doesn’t like. It is entirely unrelated. Enjoy! Cough cough cough.
