With yesterday’s (March 18) drop of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, “The Other” fever has gripped the world. Based on footage from the movie, it sure looks like the Tom Holland-starrer will at least partially adapt the 2005-2006 Marvel storyline “The Other” which found Peter Parker grappling with his growing spider side, turning into a monster, and gaining new powers. But will the movie adapt the part of the other where Wolverine offers to f**k Mary Jane to help her get over Peter Parker’s death?
To take a little step back, at the time of the 12-part crossover, Peter and MJ (and Aunt May) were living in Avengers Tower with the rest of the New Avengers team, including Wolverine. And previously, Wolverine had hit on MJ, because he has a thing for redheads. She shut him down, telling a jealous Peter she would never go for a “hairy midget” which you can’t say anymore because of woke (just kidding, but also, it wasn’t funny at the time).
Anyway, that brings us to “The Other.” In a series of circumstances too complicated to explain but I’ll try anyway, Peter discovered he was dying of radiation poisoning from his spider bite, and there was no cure. After tangling with the spider-eating energy vampire Morlun, Peter was grievously injured, lost an eye, and on the brink of death. Morlun attacked, Spider-Man morphed into a Man-Spider, killed Morlun, then died himself.
Don’t worry, he got better, forming a cocoon and then emerging better than new, with new powers and a new lease on life (also some spiders ate his corpse and became him, but also don’t worry about that).
But in the intervening time, when everyone thought Peter was dead, Wolverine tried to f**k Mary Jane.
The event happens in Marvel Knights Spider-Man #21 by J. Michael Straczynski with art by Pat Lee, MJ is in mourning when Logan tries to adamantium-laced bone her. Lurking around the corner, Wolverine approaches MJ and awkwardly tries to begin a convo with here, but MJ isn’t having it — she doesn’t want to even start to talk to him. He pushes it though, saying, “I just wanted to say… Now that he’s… That is. If you wanted to go out sometime…”
MJ, of course, slaps Wolverine, somehow not breaking her hand on his metal face bones. She stalks away, which is when the Avengers’ butler, Jarvis, approaches Wolverine and he explains what he was doing. “She’s in pain,” Logan says. “She needs something to strike out at. Something to help her move from grief to rage. Because rage keeps you moving. All grief does is make you want to die right alongside the person you lost. Rage gives you a reason to live. She needed something, someone to hit. So I have it to her. Seemed like the least I could do.”
Big “you can’t fire me, I quit” coping energy from that speech, but okay, Wolverine, you go off.
Look, all joking aside, Brand New Day is definitely not going to one-to-one adapt the meandering storyline of “The Other,” or come close other than — perhaps — the whole Peter dying and coming back as a man-spider thing. So no, you likely won’t see Hugh Jackman trying to get with Zendaya at any point in the movie… Though actor Eman Esfandi is seen in the trailer hitting on MJ at a party, and everyone assumes he’s the internet’s punching bag Paul, but what if he’s actually the MCU’s new Wolverine? The popular rumor is that Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey, and there’s a girl with Rogue hair in the trailer, so could Esfandi be the new angry Canadian mutant??? The campaign starts here, folks.
