Invincible is back on Prime Video for Season 4, and it’s wasting no time jumping into the action or setting up multiple threats for the title character. But in the background of the first three episodes, the show is also quietly setting up possibly the biggest, baddest villain the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker ever introduced. And it’s not the one you think. Spoilers past this point, but we’re not talking about Viltrumite ruler Thragg (Lee Pace)… We’re talking about Robot, aka Rex (Ross Marquand).
To recap a little bit before we get into comic book spoilers, in the first three episodes we got to see Robot — now calling himself Rex in honor of the late Rex-Splode (Jason Mantzoukas) — attempt to work with the Guardians of the Globe, who are now being led by Brit (Jonathan Banks). It hasn’t been working out perfectly, to put things lightly, with first Brit, and then Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins) shutting Rex’s ambitions to lead once again down, definitively.
Consequently, Rex has been going rogue, first when the team faced down the Sequids in the Season 4 premiere, and then again when they go up against the Flaxans in Episode 3, “I Gotta Get Some Air.” In both cases, Rex knows what he’s doing, and is even justified. If there’s a running theme for Season 4 so far, it’s that making the decisions for the greater good often means doing the wrong thing. While it works out in the first case (though Rex does swallow a Sequid), in the second things end up as a mild disaster.
Specifically, though Rex gets the backing of Brit, he and Monster Girl (Grey Griffin) end up trapped on the other side of the Flaxans’ portal, unable to return to Earth. And given how time moves faster over in the Flaxans’ planet, there’s really no way for them to return. Yes, the duo saved the Earth, but at what cost?
Well, I’ll tell you what cost, but to do so we’re going to have to talk comic book spoilers.
Robot’s Time In The Flaxan Dimension Turns Him Into Invincible‘s Biggest Bad
Without going beat by beat, the tl;dr version is that Robot and Monster Girl are held captive by the Flaxans for a long time, eventually formulating a plan to not just get free, but also take over the planet. At this time, Robot is still relatively a good guy: he’s leading a slave rebellion to free the planet. This, by the way, takes centuries, and when he’s successful he is declared emperor of the Flaxans, with Monster Girl as his queen by his side.
But in typical fashion, Robot is corrupted by his absolute power, believes that only he knows what is right… Though there are permutations there, and he keeps this particularly revelation hidden for a good long while. In fact, once he and Monster Girl return to Earth, he’s hailed as a hero and put in charge of the GDA and superhero coordination.
Again, not going beat by beat here, but this is all part of an extremely long range plan that leads to Robot killing an alternate Invincible, killing Angstrom Levy, and leaving our Invincible stranded in another dimension. And when Robot returns, he takes over the Earth, slaughters most of the heroes, scares off the Viltrumites, and even beats Invincible (again). Basically? Robot wins, and his goal is world peace, albeit through fascism.
So yeah, Thragg is the leader of the Viltrumites, and they’re the overarching threat of the series. But — and we’re still a few seasons away from this — Invincible has already laid the seeds for an even bigger threat, and the call is coming from inside the house.
