We’re mere days away from the highly anticipated announcement of… Whatever is going on with the heavily teased Firefly reunion. We know the main cast of the beloved Fox sci-fi show is involved (except Ron Glass, who passed away in 2016). And we know the announcement is coming on March 15. But what everyone wants to know is, what is the announcement?
A lot of the speculation has focused on the best-case scenario, that the cast is getting back together for a full-on follow-up series to the one-season series, and spinoff movie Serenity. But what I’d like to throw out is: what is the worst case scenario?
Before we get there, to lay it out in case you haven’t kept up, Nathan Fillion, who starred as Mal Reynolds on the show, has posted a series of videos approaching cast members one by one, teasing they’re all in on something big. That includes Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, and even Alan Tudyk, whose character Wash was killed in the movie.
Things we know this is not, per Fillion: a convention panel, a podcast, or a cross-over with his series The Rookie. It’s also not bobbleheads (the videos all include the cast nodding at Fillion in agreement). And things we know, or think we know, is that the announcement will be, er, announced on a reunion panel at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, March 15 at 10:15am ET.
So whatever it is, we’ll know shortly. But in an effort to temper everyone’s enthusiasm – my guess remains a live stage reading of an episode in 2027 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series – here are some terrible ideas that would be instantly disappointing.
It’s Crypto
This would easily be the worst announcement possible: Firefly branded crypto, endorsed by the whole cast. It would be much funnier and sadder if they promoted Firefly NFTs, but that grift has already sailed, while crypto is still in the process of cratering. This also seems like an extremely unlikely possibility as Baccarin’s husband, Ben McKenzie, has become a legit anti-crypto crusader, even appearing in front of Congress. So one would think he would shut that down immediately.
Firefly Is Coming To Fortnite
Not quite the same level as scamming people out of their money, but still a little scammy, getting Firefly as part of a Fortnite event would be pretty disappointing. The massively popular game has been running through various pop culture properties, so with Star Wars and The Simpsons already taken care of, it makes a sort of sense to start working on more niche, beloved properties like Firefly. And maybe the cast is lending their voices and likeness to the event. But it would still be a real gorram bummer to have all this build-up be relegated to character skins and emotes… Even if I’ve now convinced myself this is exactly what is going on.
Joss Whedon Is No Longer Canceled
Less disappointing on a financial level and more disappointing on an ethical level, what if they’ve decided to uncancel Joss Whedon, who was accused of multiple counts of abusive behavior on various productions and found his career go from geek god to rock bottom? Backing this up, Fillion and Tudyk have been downright wistful about working with Whedon again in the past, post-cancellation. If they “triumphantly” bring Whedon out on stage at Awesome Con to reveal he’s writing new episodes, would it be greeted with cheers or jeers? I’m guessing the former in the room, but the latter online.
It’s an unlikely possibility, but unlike the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival on Hulu that has eschewed Whedon’s contributions, the Firefly cast seems more open to working with him again. And if they’re willing to bring back Adam Baldwin, the guy who coined the term “gamergate,” there might be an openness to Joss as well. Hey, maybe Joss will be selling crypto. In Fortnite
