The series premiere of Rooster has arrived on HBO and HBO Max. Starring Steve Carrell and co-created by TV legend Bill Lawrence, the comedy has only aired one half hour, and you, the viewer, already have a number of burning questions that need to be answered. Like, is Ludlow College real? And what is Brown Fat?
If you’re wondering how we approached these burning questions in order to determine what to answer, and how, here’s the extremely scientific method:
- I didn’t want to write a recap of the premiere episode.
- So instead I checked Google Trends this morning.
There you go, that’s the whole method. Okay! Let’s get into those questions.
Is Ludlow College Real? Where Was Rooster Filmed?
The setting for the college-based comedy is, you won’t believe this, a college. Specifically, Steve Carrell’s Greg Russo heads back to his old stomping grounds at Liberal Arts college, Ludlow College. The campus seems like your platonic ideal of a college campus, replete with ivy-clad buildings and plenty of quad space. So as high school Juniors start to think ahead to their further academic pursuits, is getting taught English by a fictional best-selling author played by Carrell an option?
Er, no. But Rooster was filmed at a real school. Specifically: the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Or rather, Rooster filmed there for four days in June of 2025, according to an article on ABC10. However, it seems like there was a fair amount of additional shooting that went on, according to the University itself. And in fact, if you’re digging the cozy Fall vibes, I have some bad news for you.
“We shot during the hottest months in Stockton, but the show was trying to capture an East Coast fall semester,” Elizabeth Elliot, a recent graduate of U of P told the school. “We were layered up in coats and beanies while it was 90 plus degrees out. They planted fake bushes, piles of leaves and even sprayed the concrete down between every take to capture the ambience they were searching for.”
This also isn’t the first time U of P Stockton has been used for a Hollywood production: scenes from One Battle After Another were also shot on the campus. Um, crossover episode??
What Is Brown Fat, And Why Do You Need To Release It?
John C. McGinley plays Walter Mann, the President of the — see above — fictional Ludlow College. And he is obsessed with health, particularly steaming in his hot box sauna in the back of his house. He is also prone to screaming “release the brown fat” at Carrell’s Greg. So, what is Brown Fat, and why do you need to release it?
First of all: this is a joke in a comedy show. You don’t need to release brown fat, and if you were picturing globules of disgusting ooze pouring out of your body, that’s not what’s actually going on, at all. My intuition tells me that the writing staff thought “brown fat” is funny and McGinley screaming “release the brown fat” is funnier. That’s what’s actually going on here.
But if you are curious, per the Cleveland Clinic, Brown Fat “is a type of body fat that keeps you warm when you get cold. Brown fat also stores energy and helps your body burn calories. Brown fat starts working (activates) in cold temperatures.”
So yeah, when Walt dunks Greg in an ice fat, he isn’t trying to “release” the Brown Fat, so much as activate it. That heats you up, and burns more calories; hence the technique of heating you up in the hot box, then rapidly cooling you down in the ice bath. There you go! Release the Brown Fat!
When Will Robby Hoffman Be On Rooster?
I’ll be honest, I have no idea if this is a burning question for anyone, though Hoffman’s name did appear in the aforementioned Google Trends. Though the very funny comedian is listed in the cast for Rooster, she does not appear in the premiere episode. If you’re a Hoffmaniac, you know she’s been everywhere lately, including stand-out turns on FX’s Dying for Sex and HBO Max’s Hacks… And she will be showing up later on in the Rooster run as the roommate of Lauren Tsai’s Sunny. So get psyched!
