There’s a Firefly reunion coming, and it’s not at a convention, it’s not a podcast, and it’s not a cross-over episode of star Nathan Fillion’s The Rookie. But the announcement is coming on March 15, and now we know where you can likely watch said announcement, live. Not only that, but in a bit of a surprise: Adam Baldwin is joining the reunion, too.
To recap a bit, a little over a week ago, Fillion — who played Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds on the beloved FOX sci-fi series — posted a mysterious video of him approaching Gina Torres — who played second-in-command Zoe Alleyne Washburne, teasing that something was coming. At the time, it seemed clear there was some sort of Firefly reunion in the works on Fillion’s podcast with Alan Tudyk (who played the late, great pilot Hoban “Wash” Washburne on the series), titled Once We Were Spacemen… Mainly based on the fact that the videos were all posted as collabos with the podcast.
But in the subsequent days, Fillion has posted similar videos with Morena Baccarin (who played Companion Inara Serra), Sean Maher (doctor Simon Tam), Summer Glau (psychic badass River Tam), and Jewel Staite (mechanic Kaywinnet Lee “Kaylee” Frye). And on the Maher video, Fillion captioned it, “Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or cross-over. You are wrong.”
Then on the Staite video, Fillion revealed that an announcement is coming on March 15, aka the Ides of March, aka they are going to assassinate Julius Caesar. Just kidding.
And to put a capper on the whole thing, in a real surprise, yesterday (March 6) Fillion posted a video with Adam Baldwin, who played the merc with a heart and a hat, Jayne Cobb. That’s a real surprise, by the way, because Baldwin has tended to sit these reunions out, seems to be sort of a jerk, and has gone full conservative in his views over the past few years. But he’s back anyway!
Just to note, that means Fillion has done these mysterious videos with every major cast members except Tudyk — whose character died in the movie spinoff Serenity, but we’ll probably get a video with him in the next few days, let’s be honest — and Ron Glass, who played Shepard Book and sadly passed away in 2016.
Okay, that setup out of the way… What is this? Right now, Reddit’s r/firefly is losing their gorram minds with speculation, but we know at least where and when this announcement will come: at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. The annual convention will be hosting a live taping of Once We Were Spacemen with Fillion and Tudyk on Saturday, March 14 at 10am, followed by a Firefly cosplay meetup the same day at 3:45pm (oh gee, wouldn’t it be nice if Fillion and Tudyk “surprise” showed up to that?).
But the main event is Sunday, March 15 at 10:15am, when Awesome Con will host a panel titled “You Can’t Take The Sky From Me: The Firefly Reunion.” In attendance are Fillion, Maher, Glau, Torres, Staite, Baccarin and Tudyk (Baldwin isn’t listed, but perhaps they only recently secured his participation). And to be clear, this is not what these videos are announcing… This is where they will announce the announcement.
Which brings us around to the central mystery of this whole thing: what does “two by two, hands of blue” mean? Oh, sorry, we solved that one. No, the mystery is: what are they announcing on the panel? Given that next year is the 25th anniversary of Firefly, it’s possible they could be teasing something for 2027. And while fans have held out hope for a full-on reunion TV series or movie, that would likely include the participation of show creator Joss Whedon, who has since become persona non grata thanks to multiple abuse allegations.
Instead, I’m sticking with my guess that we’ll be getting either a Firefly live reading, or a tour of live readings of scripts for the anniversary, possibly taped for some sort of reunion special/documentary deal. At this point, if it isn’t something big? By their pretty floral bonnet, fans will end them.
