‘Lanterns’: HBO Teaser Trailer Reveals A Flying Kyle Chandler, And Not Much Else

HBO’s highly anticipated DCU series Lanterns is coming very, very soon. Specifically, the series will premiere in August on HBO and HBO Max. That’s the good news! The bad news? Based on the first teaser trailer for Lanterns, we don’t know a lot else about the show.

Okay, that’s not entirely true. We do get to see Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) driving around, sparring with each other, and investigating a town where something is very wrong. We also get to see a ring, a lantern, a Green Lantern costume, and a shot of Kyle Chandler flying — no green energy around him or anything — as the teaser, well, teases, the True Detective with superpowers show. We also get some references to Ch’p, the “squirrel” Green Lantern, and a fair amount of cursing.

We also, of note to me, personally, get to see Kyle Chandler hanging out on a football field. Friday Night Tights, anyone?

This, by the way, is very similar to how co-writer Tom King described it when we interviewed him for our podcast earlier this week: cagily. There’s certainly the hint that there will be some superpowers on the show based on the level of destruction. But HBO is clearly holding back on showing off full on DC Comics madness. Given how the maligned Green Lantern movie took a lot of knocks for the costume and effects, maybe playing it coy is the better idea here?

Regardless, we’ll likely know how much action there is when the show premieres in August, exact date TBA. Hey, maybe they’ll even release a new press picture by then!

Here’s the official logline and credits for Lanterns, per PR from HBO, followed by the trailer:

Logline: The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Credits: HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The LANTERNS pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from “Green Lantern.”
