‘Firefly’ Reunion Announcement Date Announced, In Special Announcement

The internet has been on fire — or at least, certain corners of the internet — ever since Firefly star Nathan Fillion posted a mysterious video with co-star Gina Torres teasing some sort of reunion. Well, we may not know yet exactly what the reunion is about (though we have our suspicions), but we know when we will know. Consider this the announcement of the announcement, as… Whatever it is… Will be announced on March 15.

In any case, since the Torres video, Fillion has also posted videos with fellow Firefly stars Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and just a few hours ago, Jewel Staite. They all played — in order of when I mentioned them — Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, Zoe Alleyne Washburne, Inara Serra, Simon Tam, River Tam, and Kaywinnet Lee “Kaylee” Frye on the beloved FOX sci-fi series Firefly as well as its theatrical spinoff, Serenity.

While we speculated this reunion was likely on Fillion’s podcast with also co-star Alan Tudyk (who played Hoban “Wash” Washburne), Once We Were Spacemen, Fillion noted on the Maher video that, “Some of you have guessed convention, podcast, or cross-over. You are wrong.” Now me, I guessed that meant they were doing a live podcast or staged reading of an episode of the show, or something along those lines, instead of the “five seasons and another movie” bent that r/firefly has been betting their lives on.

But we did get a little more on the Staite video. It’s still mysterious, but she does say “shiny” and the caption reads, “I was hoping you would say that… an announcement is coming Sunday, March 15.”

Still absent from the videos is Adam Baldwin, who played Jayne Cobb on the series, though he’s become a bit of a dink since the show premiered so that’s probably okay. On the other hand, Ron Glass, who played Shepard Book, sadly passed away in 2016.

So unless they’re gonna get Christina Hendricks back — and I guess one wonders where Tudyk is in all of this — the gang’s all here for whatever this is, in 11 short days. Given the videos are posted on the Once We Were Spacemen account, I’m still betting it’ll be a gorram staged reading/podcast of some sort. But I am but a leaf on the wind, so what do I know?
