Chip Zdarsky Offers Up ‘Avengers: Armageddon’ Reading List: Captain America, Wolverine, Absolute Batman

Avengers Armageddon crop

Avengers: Armageddon, Marvel’s big summer event, is coming at you faster than an evil asteroid that can only be stopped by the most elite oil drillers on Earth. And in advance of the series that promises to redefine Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (again) hits stores, writer Chip Zdarsky has offered up three, crucial comics you must check out: Captain America, Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, and of course, Absolute Batman.

Wait what? Batman? Oh, Zdarsky, you scamp. Here’s what he had to say about what’s essential to read before Avengers: Armageddon #1 hits stores on June 3, 2026, via his latest newsletter:

  • CAPTAIN AMERICA #6-11: I would also suggest #1-5 just ‘cause they’re beautiful comics, but this arc tees up both Cap and Ross for ARMAGEDDON!
  • WOLVERINE: WEAPONS OF ARMAGEDDON #1-4: This bad boy has ARMAGEDDON right in the title so it’s a for-sure read! This mini sets Logan up for AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON, and, honestly, the ending of this will be huge for the Avengers and this event going forward.
  • ABSOLUTE BATMAN #1-19: Honestly I just wanted to help these guys out. I know you’re sick of Batman, but give it a shot!! It’s good, I swear!!

Not to be Mr. No Fun, but yes, of course Absolute Batman isn’t essential to Armageddon (unless Red Hulk kicks a baby at some point). As for the rest of the story, what we do know is that Red Hulk has taken over Latveria, and the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wolverine, and more all try to take him down. We also know that this has something to do with Origin Boxes — boxes full of powers and costumes — that were brought back from the Ultimate Universe by Miles Morales.

(On that note, it seems likely that Chris Condon’s Reborn: Ultimate Impact will also tie in, in some way, so perhaps Zdarsky is only giving the essential reading list for his titles. And Absolute Batman.)

And we also know that Marvel is promising this will redefine the Avengers in a major way, similar to Avengers: Disassembled way back in Avengers #500. Given that today’s Avengers #36 seems to be the final issue for a while, that certainly makes sense.

So, get to it, folks! You heard Zdarsky… Time to get into prep mode, because Armageddon is coming, and you don’t want to miss a thing.
