Jacopo Camagni, Marvel Artist, Dead At Age 48

Jacopo Camagni, an Italian artist known for his work on Marvel Comics including the just-launched Generation X-23, has died at age 48.

Per Bleeding Cool, Camagni passed away due to complications with heart surgery. While Camagni was best known for his work with Marvel, he started as a professional penciller in 1998 on Lupin III Millennium, an officially licensed Italian project with Monkey Punch, the creator the series. However, it was winning ChesterQuest — now Marvel EIC CB Cebulski’s contest to find new talent — that catapulted him to fame.

Per his official bio, Camagni “lent his art to some of the most famous characters of the Marvel Universe, such as Longshot, Hawkeye, Deadpool, Deadpool the Duck, the X-Men and Kanan from the Star Wars franchise.”

He also created his own series, Nomen Omen, with Marco B. Bucci, which was a hit in Europe when it started publishing in 2017, and later was brought to the United States as a 15 issue series at Image Comics.

More recently, Camagni helped reinvent the Scarlet Witch alongside writer Steve Orlando over several volumes of the series. And as mentioned, he just launched Generation X-23 with writer Jody Houser on February 18, 2026. That title is solicited through issue three with Camagni’s art, with Marco Renna stepping in for issue #4; though it’s unknown at this time whether Camagni finished his work before his unfortunate passing.

Camagni was also openly and proudly gay, and contributed to multiple Pride anthologies, including Marvel’s 2021 Marvel Voices: Pride issue, a pride variant for 2021’s Star Wars Bounty Hunters #13 from Dark Horse, and even worked on a Dark Horse book titled The Pride, about LGBTQ+ heroes getting fed up that straight heroes get all the attention, also for Dark Horse.
